GERMAN DEFEAT. The collapse, with heavy losses, of a German attempt to break through to Moscow is reported by the Russians. The Germans planned to take Roslavl ;nd develop the break through towards Moscow between Roslavl and Bry.msk, while the extreme south wing of the attack swung south-east to take Kursk. Foiled in this attempt, the Germans wheeled south and attacked from Pochcp, half way between Bryansk and Klintsy. Again defeated they turned still further south and tried a threenrnneed attack but theßryansk garrison marched south along the Desna river and engaged the Germans at Trubchevsk, midway between Bryansk and Novgorod Sieversk. The Germans retreated and the Russians launched a counter-offensive, the Germans being thrown back all along the line between Pochep and Novgorod Sieversk.
