APPEALS AGAINST SERVICE

MANPOWER COMMITTEE’S DECISION YESTERDAY’S SITTING The fire which recently destroyed the Auckland premises of John Burns, and Company. Ltd., was given as the cause for an appeal by the company, which was heard by live Christchurch Manpower Committee yesterday. The appeal was for a cashier, Walter George Johnston, employed in the Auckland branch. Johnston originally had been called for overseas service, but as his medical gradin’? was Grade 2. he was transferred to the territorials. In a letter to the committee the firm stated that Jolvnston had been assistant accountant at Christchurch, when, through the death of the cashier at Auckland, he was transferred. It was the exceptional circumstances, caused by the Auckland fire, which had necessitated the appeal. The appeal was adjourned for three months, and will be heard at Auckland. Mr J. S. Barnett presided, and with him were Messrs S. L. Wright and G. T. Thurston. Mr E. D. Thompson represented the Crown, and Captain G. H. Anderson represented the military authorities. In a reserved decision on the appeal of Norbert Bamford, who was called for service in a training cadre, live committee decided that his cadre training should be postponed. An appeal by the Director of National Service for John Raymond McGinn was withdrawn as he has now been made available by the Post and Telegraph Department. A farm labourer, Robert William Tindall, was appealed for by C. Harcourt, a farmer, of Sheffield. Tindall will not enter camp until February 1. An icing-sugar manufacturer. S. Howman, appealed for a factory worker, Leslie Raymond Symons. Symons will not enter camp until January 1. An appeal for a tractor driver. William Dalziel Turner, was made by B. Morrow, who is farming 1566 acres near Geraldine. Turner wilt not enter camp until January 1. " , . , Another farmer. J. Deans, appealed for a cowman, Onesimus Cox. Cox's training will start on March 1, A nurseryman, C. M. Barnett, appealed for Ravmond James Campion, a nursery hand. His request that Campion's training .should be postponed until January 1 was granted, Kodak, Ltd., sought a postponement until October 15 for the training of Russell Sidney Leslie Lawrence. The appeal was granted. , Anneals were made by Auto Boci> Builders for a panel-beater, Frederick Haddrcll Jones, and by Modern Motor Bodies, Ltd., for a motor-body builder, Lawrence Burke. Both men will not cnlei camp until January 1.
