LYTTELTON NEWS
* PETROL FOR TAXIS Unless they receive some relief in the way of a further grant of petrol, the Lyttelton .taxis may cease to operate from Monday until the end of the month. There are three taxis in the port, with two owners. One owner said yesterday that his petrol would be finished to-day or to-morrow and he would have no option but to lay his car up, and the owner of the other two cars is in much the same position. They have sent urgent messages to the Minister in Wellington, asking that more petrol be granted to enable them to carry on. The other owner explained that the shortage was caused by the recent cut in petrol under licence, followed by the abnormal weather conditions during the week. During the wet days the taxis were doing double or treble the ordinary running. Police Assist Patriotic Fund Two efforts recently organised by the Lyttelton police have resulted in the patriotic funds being augmented by £2l and £lO respectively. As a final effort, the police have arranged a dance to be held next week, and for which there already has been a good sale of tickets.
