SKY-GLOW
Sir, —In spite of his official position, “One of the Wardens” can suggest no other reason for the restricted lighting than that, if bombing aeroplanes came,. the dimness might help him and his comrades to catch some (probably mythical) filth columnists! After all, his lack of further inventiveness is hardly surprising when we remember that in spite of a most rigorous black-out, such as is not even contemplated here, the Royal Air Force has no difficulty on the darkest of nights in finding Berlin or any other target. In short, the absence, of sky-glow would, be no more of a handicap to either bomber or battleship than if the wardens compelled people to stand on their heads instead of to cover lights. Incidentally, these people who do not lose their heads just because it is war time will see in the restriction of car headlights an example of hysterical stupidity outstanding even in this farrago of stupidities. Sky-glow from cars could give only the remarkable piece of information that somewhere between, say, one and 10. miles away there must be a road! For the rest, “One of the Wardens’? claims that some persons half a world away agree with his own estimate of his nobility (even if the housewives he orders about are not so sure) and I who had called it something quite different must of course be a fifth columnist! In case he should panic at this further proof of my guilt, perhaps to soothe him I had better say that I enlisted immediately when volunteers were called for in August, 1914, and, as it happened, was crippled on Gallipoli, which facts you, sir, could of course easily verify. However, I should think that “One of the Wardens” is in a fit state to believe that I went merely to be able to work unsuspected as a fifth columnist a quarter of •a century later.—Yours, etc., CITIZEN.
