PARCELS FOR MISSING SOLDIERS

DISTRIBUTION OF CONTENTS DISCUSSED

A report that parcels addressed to missing and deceased soldiers were opened and sold in the canteens for the benefit of canteen funds was referred to by Mr C. D,. Hayhurst, at a meeting of the Geraldine and Temuka Zone Patriotic Committee.

The practice in the past was for such parcels to be shared among the men in the unit in which the missing soldier was serving, said Mr Hayhurst. After discussion, it was agreed to recommend that the provincial council be asked to obtain definite information as to how parcels, of deceased and missing men ate handled. The need for adequate comforts for men in the mercantile marine was stressed by Mr, W. E. Tangney, who said that as the men were not allowed to possess wireless sets, during the war, an appeal had been made for gramophones. It was agreed that the provincial council >be asked to report on the method of distribution of gifts to the mercantile marine.

It was agreed to urge a national appeal for a fund for the dependants of the two navies in preference to a sectional appeal by the Sheepowners’ Federation • which would mean a double appeal to one section of the community. Both the Geraldine and Temuka Post War Relief. Sub-Committees reported .that no requests had been received for assistance during the month.
