SUMNER STREET LIGHTING
CHECK ON LAMPS IN AREA BOROUGH COUNCIL’S DECISION . A check on all street lamp shades in the Sumner area is to be made by the Sumner Borough Council, In addition the attention of the Emergency Precautions Scheme light wardens is to be drawn to strong lights showing in private houses. This decision was made by the council at its meeting on Monday night. A letter was received from the Christchurch -reduced lighting controller, Mr E. Hitchcock, who stated that there was evidently some misunderstanding about lamps showing to seaward, that lamps in streets at right angles to the sea were reported visible to master mariners, and that the poles of such lamps should be climbed in order to note if the sea was visible. “We have written offering complete co-operation and have asked for details of a proper shade,” said the Mayor (Mr J. E. Tail). “Co-operation has not been offered and no answer received regarding the type of shade. We keenly resent an inspection of our lighting without representation from the council. “If our area is so important, it is just as important that we should get more co-operation and assistance where we expect to find it.” The council decided to advise the controller on these lines and to express its anxiety to' co-operate efficiently. The borough foreman reported that shades had been fitted to about 300 street lamps. Street lighting was now under one switch, and could be cut off at a moment's notice.
