WOUNDED MEN RETURN

FULL LIST OF NAMES

PARTY WELCOMED AT WELLINGTON SOLDIERS FROM GREECE AND CRETE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 10. Several hundred wounded men, recently arrived, were officially welcomed at Wellington to-day by Ministers and cheering members of the public. The party included both Maoris and pakehas, many of whom bore evidence of their strenuous and heroic fighting. The main topic of conversation among the men was, perhaps, the splendid work of the Maori soldiers who were praised to the skies by their pakeha comrades as the best soldiers in the world. The Maoris in turn paid a tribute to the pakehas, declaring that the whole of the New Zealand Army was splendid in battle and retreat. The party included soldiers wounded in the campaigns in Greece and Crete. Still cheerful and optimistic, all, whether- walking or cot cases, had stories to tell that proved that the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force had been welded into a strong brotherhood that would go through future actions with every individual and unit having complete faith in those with them. The men all said that the Germans were good soldiers behind their machinefuns, but did not like hand-to-hand ghting. The parachute troops were magnificently trained and marvellously equipped, and the organisation of their attacks was worked out to the last detail. • One .man, referring to the Red Cross, said *, that the Germans always respected it, and' would not fire on troops on the ground if they were without arms or steel helmets. The Acting-Prime Minister (the Hon. W. Nash) in a message read to the troops by the Minister for Defence (the Hon. F. Jones), stated that New Zealand was proud of her troops. The work they had done was beyond praise. "Now' that you arc back our simple and straightforward duty is to see that our feelings of pridfe in you are translated into practical action.” • Fart of Civilians "We shall do everything in our power to restore your health and enable you to return to civil life to carry oh the work of making New Zealand, in reality, a land for heroes to live in. It is our earnest wish-that you will all be - soon restored to health and strength to join the army Of New Zealand citizens in their march towards better things. Yours was a great task suecessfully * performed. Ours willbecarried out with the same devotion and detemination, in. the spirit of brotherhood; you have so nobly, exemplified.’ . Mr Jones spoke In similar steam. He said >that where New Zealanders had met the enemy , they - had , done their part in a way that earned.the admiration of the! world. M . The Mayor (Mr T. C A. Hislop) extended a welcome on behalf of the city and the Hon, W. Perry, M.L.C.. Dominion president of Returned Soldiers” Association, on behalf of all returned soldiers, “Some of you may not. find it easy to return,” he said, * tut the Government and the Returned Soldiers’ Association will help you.’’He hoped, thereturning men would join the Returned Soldiers’ Association and so help • themselves • and weir comr^ea;AThere Was work to be done,in NeC Zealand for the Boys overseas, and - they could go • on helping to win the I . war‘by joining in. - that work. .Members of Party The following soldiers were .included in the party (the town indicated is the residence of the . next-of-kin) ' t.‘ : -- OFFICERS ' Baim Walk&.'-'Temporary-; Majorr Gdsborne;Beaven, George Gor-, dbn.
