WOMEN’S AUXILIARY
CANTERBURY MANUFACTURERS’ ASSOCIATION The monthly meeting of the Women's Auxiliary of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association was held recently, with Mrs R. A. Ambridge presiding over a good attendance. A vote of sympathy was passed with Mr A. M. Hollander and family. Mrs Cecil Wood made an appeal on behalf of the Plunket Society’s annual appeal, which will take the form of surprise packets this year; the support of the auxiliary was promised. Mrs D. E. Pearce sang two solos and Mrs F. E. Reeve played the accompaniments. ■ Mr W. Pattison gave a talk on "The Fur Trade ih New Zealand.” A large pile of > new woollen • garments for children was completed for sending overseas. Mesdames Roberts and Gawler judged the competition for the best article made from a sugar-sack, the result of which was as follows: Mrs C. Houlton 1, Mrs C. McKenzie 2, Mrs R. T. Alston 3. WOMEN’S TEMPERANCE UNION LINWOOD BRANCH The monthly meeting of the LinWood branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held in the Linwood Baptist Hall. and Mrs C. R. N. Mackie presided. Mrs G. Bielby gave ,two recitations, and Mrs Turner and Miss M. B. Lovell-Smith gave talks. Mrs Ronald Black gave a report on the Seamen’s Rest activities, and a collection was taken to buy coal for this institute. Mesdames Fuller and Stokes were appointed vice-presidents. INSURANCE DANCE The annual cabaret dance organised by members of the Insurance Institute of New Zealand was held at the Winter Garden last night, and all profits were for the Patriotic Fund. Har old Bailey's orchestra played the dance music,* and Colleen and Maurice Dixon gave an exhibition dance. Members of the committee were Messrs C. V. Ritchie (secretary), E. H. Box, W. H Down, R. D. Cargill, C. W. Ennis, W. N. Jarvie, E. Butler, J. M. V. Bain. E. C, Ellison, and W. H. Nurse WOMEN’S DIVISION OF FARMERS’ UNION ALFORD FOREST Members decided to assist the Stavely branch of the Red Cross at a meeting of the Alford Forest branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. Mrs Cotteril (Methven) gave a demonstration. Mrs D, H. Maclean presided. Competitions resulted:— Chrysanthemum, Mrs E. T. Grigg 1, Miss A. Grigg 2, Mrs H. Grigg 3; bloom, Mrs R. Grigg 1, Mrs L. Lylllan 3, FERNSIDE-SPRINGBANK BRANCH At the home ,of Mrs Milne, "Pine Farm,” the monthly meeting of the Fernside-Springbank branch of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union was held. Arrangements were made for the annual birthday jparty, which is to be held in July.
Mrs Carpenter gave a talk on her recent trip to Nelson with the Women’s Division excursion bus. Hostesses were Mesdames Armstrong, Bayley, and Bury. Mrs J. Evans won a competition.
