WORLD FEDERATION
Sir,—As the matter seems to, me of some Importance, may I refer back to a letter -by "Stay Put," which appeared in your columns last week. In this fetter the question was asked: ''JFone 'State cannot find economic security, can two or more States in a similar plight by combining be assured of such security?" Why not ask the further question: "If,one State cannot find military -security, can two or more States, by combining* nan such security!" ' • ' . „ Un That sUch a question should be asked at this late day is a disheartening evidence of the inability of mankind to learn obvious lessons. The tendency, both among 1 nations and individuals,, to imagine that the state of things to which they have become accustomed is permanent and that their security is a thing entirely within their own power it a sheer delusion. There is no such thing in the world to-day as "staying put," and events have, shown that nothing we have can be retained except at the cost of vigilance, effort, and the goodwill of others. No country, not even the British Empire or America, is wholly independent either from* a military or economic point of view, and both these countries have frankly admitted the fact Security, even in a tolerable measure, can only be achieved by the peoples of the world defending their cWunon interests and standing shoulder, to shoulder.—Yours, etc., T ANALYST. June 23, 1941.
