Sir,—My definite opinion, based on observation, is that the closing of McCormack’s Bay by means of the causeway rpafl is directly, responsible for the erosion Of north spit. It interfered with the scour of a vast quantity of water, which had the effect of a cushion on the Heathcote river. The wall constructed directed the flow of the river straight at the north spit, weak: enihg the sandhills until eventually they gave why from the point in line With 1h» catiifWiy row.
