PARENTS’ EDUCATIONAL UNION

An enlightening address, generously illustrated by lantern slides, was given last night by Dr. H. D. Bfoadhead, at the monthly meeting of the Parents’ National Educational Union, held at the home of the president, Mrs Norton Francis. The subject was; “Greece,” a country visited by Dr. and Mrs Broadhead in 1936-37. The Greeks, Dr. Broadhead explained, were originally nomads, who, 4000 or 5000 years before the birth of ’Christ, were wandering in Europe. Yet in a few hundred years they progressed until they reached the greatest heights in art, sculpture, literature, philosophy and for a century and a half enjoyed a measure of true democracy. The Western world, he said, owed much to ancient Greece—to Homer and his epics, to Sappho the lyric poet, to Greek philosophers like* Socrates, Pluto, and Aristotle, to such historians as Herodotus and Thucydides and to great orators of whom Demosthenes was an outstanding example. Dr, Broadhead showed pictures of the Acropolis, a monument to the desire of Pericles, to impress the world with the splendour of Athens, different views of the Parthenon, pictures of ruined and restored temples, of roads trodden by Socrates ana the Rock from which St. Paul spoke to the Athenians. An interesting lecture was concluded by the showing of pictures of the remains of ancient civilisation in Crete, buidings dating back to 1500 8.C., but discovered only in the 70’s of last century.

Mrs E. C. Gough thanked Dr. Broadhead for his address. Members were entertained at supper by Mrs Francis.
