BOY AND GIRL WORKERS

SHORTAGE GENERALLY “NOT ACUTE” The demand for boy and girl workers, with a few exceptions, exceeds only slightly the numbers of boys and girls available. This has been shown •, in a check made by the Youth Centre in May on the relation y. of demand and supply. The main exceptions are domestic and farm work, not included in the check, in which there has been a shortage of boy and girl workers for some time. With girls, the apparent excess in the demand shown by the May figures is mainly attributable to the shortage of girls for factory positions. The secretary to the centre (Mr N. S. Woods) said yesterday that on the boys’ side 63 city vacancies had been notified to the centre in May. Of these, . 27 were filled within one day of receipt of notice, and 14 others within five days. At the end of the month only nine vacancies were unfilled, and only three of the original 63 had been filled by employers from other sources. This indicated that the shortage , of boys for positions was hot acute,, as might have been thought. ■ The position for girls was similar, he said. The centre was notified 76 vacancies (not including domestic work). Six positions were filled by employers from outside sources, and seven were still open at the end of the month. In the case of girls, however, some firms had what amounted to standing orders with the centre, and these were not included, which would suggest that the shortage was slightly more marked than the figures indicated.
