TURF GOSSIP

Partnership Registered Not Out is to be raced in partnership between Mr C. M. Turrell and Mr R. G. G. Westenra. The horse is at present having an easy time in F. Roberts’s team, and will not race , again until the early spring meetings. A Napier Winner Vin d’Honneur, a recent winner In Hawke’s Bay, is a two-year-old filly by Tiderace from Courtesy, by Limond from Homage, by Absurd from Eulogy, and is owned by her breeder, Mr T. fl. Lowry. The filly is no doubt aptly named, but many racegoers would prefer something easier to pronounce. Bred at Riccarton West Wind, winner of the principal event at the Victoria Racing Club’s June meeting last week, was bred at Riccarton by Messrs J. W. and L. W. Storry, and after being in training for a while, was sold privately by them to go to Melbourne. She is a four-year-old filly by Posterity from Lady Zephyr, by Robespierre from Lady Minerva. Suspended As a result of an inquiry into interference with Smiling Thru’ in the Winter Steeplechase at Ellerslie on Saturday, jockey F. Cleaver, rider of Jewish Lad, was suspended for a month. The suspension was*not imposed until after the last race, in which Cleaver was unplaced on Expellant. Success as Jumper Hornpipe, who broke a leg in the Winter Steeplechase at Auckland, was a half-brother to Starland, Limelight, Paperchase Starshooter. and a lot of other winners, but he was a complete failure on the flat. Put to jumping this season he had a much better record—two wins, two seconds, and a third in nine starts. Disqualified for 12 Months P. T. Hogan, the Washdyke racehorse owner and trainer, was disqualified for 12 months from yesterday by the Wellington District Committee. Hogan appeared in answer to charges laid under rules 243 (1) and 338 (1) (E) of the Rules of Racing. After hearing evidence and counsel, Mr C. S. Thomas, of Christchurch, the committee unanimously disqualified Hogan for the term stated. Rule 243 (1) deals with owners betting with bookmakers in respect of their own horses, and rule 338 (1) (E) with accepting wagers to be determined by the amount of totalisator odds.

TROTTING NOTES

Answer to Correspondent D. J., Wellington: The race started at 2.21 p.m. An Improver Agent, the aged mare by Nelson Derby from Mavis Wood, has taken some time to find her form, but she has raced with consistency during the last few months. She is still eligible for the slower class races, but in eight starts she has won two races, has been second twice, and third twice. Change of Name At the last meeting of the board of the New Zealand Trotting Association the name of the pacer, Spats, was changed to Western Boy. The name Spats had been claimed by an Australian owner. Western Boy is a five-year-old gelding by Western King from a Lord Chancellor mare, and is trained at Ashburton by C. Moriarty. Bred for Speed Native Queen, a half-sister to Padlock, was one of the most brilliant mares in saddle raced in New Zealand and it is possible that one of her progeny in the five-year-old, Keewah, may yet prove successful on the race track. She has done little racing, but her form at Ashburton last month was full of promise. She is trained at Ashburton by J. Behrns. Consistency In his 13 starts this season Swagger Jack has failed to win a race, but for consistency his record is hard to beat. He has been second five times, third twice, and fourth four times. He will make his next appearance at Ashburton on June 21. An Ashburton Team J. Fraser, jun., who recently set up as a public trainer at Ashburton, is getting a useful team together, and recent additions include Crown Peak, Gold Bank, Direct Bell, Embargo, and Loyal Jack, all useful performers from Southland. Courier, a three-year-old gelding by Rey de Oro from Belinda, has recommenced work after a spell, while Horse Power, Princess Maritza, and Harold Guy are all in regular work. A Three-Year-Old Courier, a three-year-old in J. Fraser’s team at Ashburton, is bred the way of a good racehorse, for he is by Rey de Oro from Belinda, a fine race mare when trained by G. McKendry. Belinda won several two mile races and was a really good stayer. McKendry, who now trains a small team at Methven, has running on his property Silver de Oro, one of the greatest mares for her size ever raced in New Zealand. Service Exemptions.—The Dannevirke County Council has decided to write to the Minister for Manpower entering an emphatic protest against the vast number of single men being exempted from service with His Majesty’s Forces. —Press Association.
