CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTORS

♦ DECISION OF WELLINGTON CITY COUNCIL (P.A.) WELLINGTON, June 11. A recommendation by the tramways committee that the council take into consideration the question of dismissal of conscientious objectors to military service who refused to do any for® service, including attending wounded and ambulance work, was approved without discussion by the Wellington City Council to-night. The Mayor (Mr T. C. A. Hislop) said that the matter had arisen from, a particular case, which was before the tramways committee, of an employee, a conscientious objector, who to do any type of service. The of the committee was that it should not, having due regard to the true con* scientious objector, keep in the council’s employ at the public expense, fin objector who would do nothing for tne public. The particular case had been before the appeal board, but there was no decision yet. However, fijflm it, ■ question of policy arose. From his ex* perience of true conscientious object* ors in the last war, they were, usually prepared to help in some way, Examples were members of the Society of Friends with the sick and wounded. On the other hand, there were those objpetors who would do nothing am live at the expense and sacrifice 01 others. Should they continue to be em* ployed at the public expense?
