RED CROSS SOCIETY
♦ ELECTION OF OFFICERS “It is imperative that the wounded soldiers should get just a little above hospital fare,” Dr. J. Leslie Will said, at the annual meeting of the North Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Red Cross Society held yesterday morning. Sir Hugh Acland presided. A remit came from the Christchurch Sub-Centre that, as cake did not come under the heading of comforts, money would be better spent by more profitable means. “Whatever you do with this remit we shall still expect the cake,” said Dr. Will. On a show of hands, the remit was defeated. “Canterbury's quota for the New Zealand Society is £2OO, but I have come to the conclusion that it is being absolutely starved,” Dr. Will said in presenting the annual report. "This quota must be considerably improved; and although some may think that the quota is already large enough, it would be better for sub-centres to send in any surplus money rather than have frozen funds." It was decided that the question be loft to the incoming executive. It was hoped by the society that a Prisoners of War Bureau could be set up very shortly where relations and friends could obtain information and be given full assistance and advice. Officers elected for the year were:— President, Sir Hugh Acland; vice-pre-sidents, Lady Wigram, Mrs Herbert Smith, Mr C. J. Ronaldson; chairman, Dr. J.. Leslie Will; deputy-chair-man, Mr, J. G. L.
