TURF GOSSIP

Reminder.—Nominations for the Ashburton County Racing Club’s winter meeting close to-night, at 8 o’clock, with the secretary, ’Phone 61, Ashburton. —1 Grand National Candidate Slayer, who ran unplaced in the Dunedin Steeplechase on Saturday with 12-7, won the same race 12 months ago with 11-11. Last year he came on to Riccarton to finish second to Clarion Call in the Grand National Steeplechase and to win the Lincoln Steeplechase. With Clarion Call missing this year, Slayer will now be called upon to carry big weights at Riccarton. Slayer would be entitled to receive appreciable weight from Clarion Call in the Riccarton big event, but with the North Islander missing for the remainder of the season, Slayer will now no doubt head the list. American Racing Whirlaway became the fifth horse in the history of American racing to win the "triple crown’’ with his success in the 25,000 dollars Belmont Stakes on Saturday. His other feature successes were in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. Whirlaway ran the mile and'a half in the Belmont Stakes in 2min 31sec, carrying 9st. Owned by Mr Warren Wright, Whirlaway is by Blenheim, winner of the English Derby for H.H. the Aga Khan in 1930. A Successful Trip Dividend’s two successes at Ellerslie were his most valuable to date, and he collected £BSO in stake money. He hit every fence in the Great Northern Hurdle Race but in his two subsequent efforts, he did not make any mistakes, and won each very comfortably. Earlier in the season, it was intended to put him to steeplechasing, but he may now be kept to hurdling for this term at least. Dividend’s dam, Divinette, is a sister to Punchestown and a half-sister to Charlatan, both high class jumpers. A Horse’s Dislike Esquire, who refused to gallop after passing the, crossing near the mile post the first time in the Cornwall Handicap at Ellerslie, repeating his performance of an earlier occasion at Ellerslie, made amends in ■ the first division of the Ranfurly Handicap on the second day, when he won easily. The distance of the Ranfurly Handicap was seven furlongs, in which the crossing did not have to be passed. A Profitable Comeback Having hi softest race after being off the scene for some seasons, Wharemanea ran third in the St. Hellers Hurdles at the Auckland Easter meeting. His next race, was the Avondale Hurdles, which he won decisively from a useful field. After this success Wharemanea was purchased by the Hon. E. R. Davis, M.L.C., and Mr O. Nicholson, in whose colours he failed to gain a place in the Waikato Plate. Last Monday Wharemanea won the Hunt Club Hurdles at Ellerslie, extending his winning record by scoring in the Panmure Hurdles on Wednesday, while on Saturday he was second in the Oraket Hurdles. Wharemanea raced four times in the 1934-35 season, earning £3 for a third In the Horehore Stakes at Dargaville. The following season he ran third in' the OrawaitL Hack Handicap at Westport, his only placing in five starts. Wharemanea, who was foaled in 1930, is by Lucullus, from Marble Queen, by Marble Arch from Whakatupoto by Hotchkiss from Reproach by Fitz Hercules.

TROTTING NOTES

Answer to Correspondent A.J.T.. Christchurch: Seaworthy by Man o’war—May Tracey, by Captain Tracey—Lady Harold. Remit to Conference The annual meeting of delegates to the New Zealand -Trotting Conference will be held at Wellington in July, and among the remits to be presented is one from the Canterbury Park Trotting Club which advocates the inclusion in the programme of every Metropolitan club of a race for C grade drivers. The remit has much to recommend it,'for the ranks of A grade drivers are being reinforced all too slowly, and reinsmen, well past their best days, still drive regularly. This remit appeared on the order paper at Conference last year,- but it was withdrawn because of the war conditions existing. Shadow Maid Improves Shadow Maid,- who failed rather badly in the Nelson Cup on Saturday, made-amends when she won the President’s Handicap yesterday, and with her stable-mate, Shadow Son, in second place, the dividend was a good one. Both winner and runner-up showed improvement on the first day s running; but Shadow Maid’s consistent form during the year entitled her to a win. In running third, Scapa Flow again showed herself a - good, solid pacer. Jill Tar, who had been made favourite for the cup on the opening day, did not start in the two miles race yesterday ,but she made amends by winning the Farewell Handicap, of a mile, in 2min 12 2-ssec. This was R, Donald’s fourth win at the meeting. A Well-bred Pacer „ On the second day at Nelson, L. F. Berkett came into prominence with Gunman and Douglas McElwyn, both winners at good prices. Gunman is a five-year-old gelding by Man o WarFlying Cloud. 2mih 13 3-sseC, a wellbred mare by Wrack from Pearlchild, who also left Chllde Pointer, Pearl Pointer, Sea Pearl, .Nantwich, First Wrack, Giro, and Vanity Fair. Bracketed Horses . , . ' . A feature of yesterday’s racmg at Nelson was the frequency with which coupled horses filled the places. In the Appelby Handicap, L. F. Berkett filled the first two places.with Gunman and Travelwell, and m the Tasman Handicap was first and third with Douglas McElwyn and Seameai, while in the President’s Handicap Shadow Maid and Shadow Son, trained by J. Bryce, ran first and second, OWNERS AND TRAINERS 00 you want to be certain that raw borte war leave the barrier and see out me distance? It so, consult GEORGE BBTXLK.
