HOTEL LICENCES

: MEETING OF CITY COMMITTEE Ten hotel licensees have each been convicted of offences under the Licensing Act in the last year, as against 23 the year before, said Inspector H. Martin at yesterday’s meeting of the Christchurch Licensing Committee. There was a general improvement in the conduct he said, and only 11 barmen had been convicted as against 20 the year before. Whereas 145 .men had been found unlawfully on premises the year before, there had only been 102 in the last 12 months. Requisitions for improvements had been issued, and all except one hotel had completed the works required. Mr H. A. Young, S.M., presided, and with him were Messrs H. H. Wauchop, W. G. Wright, W. E. Simes and H. Holland. Sixteen solicitors appeared and many publicans. Transfers were granted as follows: Club Hotel—Robert Francis Lawrence to David Rodgers. Market Hotel —Catherine Brooks to Herbert Fox. Oxford Hotel—William Angus to Leo Marcus Gregory. New licences were granted to the following:—David Rodgers, Club Hotel; Norman Wray Millner, Coker’s' Hotel; Herbert Fox, Market Hotel; Walter Bernard Dudson, New Albion Hotel; Albert Joseph Deyell, .New Railway Hotel; Alfred Barrett, New Zeaiander Hotel; Leo Marcus Gregory, Oxford Hotel: Walter Carlton, Storey’s Tourist Hotel. Hotels where licences were renewed are:—Caledonian, Dennis Coffey; Carlton, Charles Clark; Central, Gerald Patrick Goulding; Clarendon, : Arthur Harvey; Crown, John Sweeney; Dominion.
