RACING AND TROTTING

ASTRAL FLAME WINS SUCCESS FOR ST. CLOUD AND HALF AND HALF DUNEDIN MEETING CONCLUDES (F.0.0.R.) DUNEDIN, June 7. The Dunedin Jockey Club was again favoured with fine weather for the concluding day of its winter meeting at Wlngatui to-day and there was a large attendance. The course was- softer than on the previous - two days, but nevertheless provided good winter going. The totalisetor handled £26,007 (win £11,904 10s place £14.902 10s), as against £19,103 10s on the corresponding day last year, when the track was very heavy and the fields thinned out considerably. The total for the three days’ meeting was £76,935, as against £50,009 10s last year, when the cancellation of the King's Birthday holiday and other factors seriously affected speculation. Winner trained by G, McKay, Wingatul. NOTES ON THE RACING The Hurdle Race Mungatoon, favourite for the Greenfield Hurdles, again failed. He moved up to the leaders. Remembo and Made Money, half a mile from home, and followed Made Money into the straight, but weakened In the run home to fourth place. Made Money was slightly in front of Half and Half over the last fence, but the lastnamed wore him down in the run to the post. Merry Simon, who was last for two-thirds of the journey, was a creditable third, two lengths in front of Mungatoon. with Prince Ruenalf, Combat, and Islay Downs next. Monlpere again failed to leave the mark. In the Last Stride Paoette tried to win the Electric Hack Handicap from the early stages, and was only overhauled in the last two strides. She was followed Into th# straight by Milton Abbas. Paper Whistle, and Royoney, but just as Papette successfully held them off, Invincible worked his way through the middle of the bunch, to get, up to beat Papette, who stopped badly nearing the post. Paper Whistle was a good third, a length in front of Milton Abbas, who had every chance, but failed to stay on. Favourite prevails Withdrawal had an easy win/In the Empire Handicap and gave her trainer. A. E. Oldham, his thtW successive win. Cold Flight and Moneymore were slow away, and when the field had travelled a furlong Master Hotspur showed put well clear of Withdrawal. Top Row, Nlghtcalm, and Rebel Mote. This was the order Into the straight, but Master Hotspur soon retired, went to the front to have the race won a furlong from homo. Nlghtcalm finished on well Into, second place, and Gold Flight came from a rear Dosltlon to gain third money, a peck in front of Top Row. with Rebel Mate next. Sheeny Returns Lady Don set a fast pace from the outset of the Domain jind eptered the straight four lengths la front of John*

TURF GOSSIP A Favoured Race Raroa, winner of the concluding event at Wingatui, was runner-up to Pink Lad in the same race last year. The latter was ridden by P. Spratt, who rode Raroa on Saturday. Disappointed Mungatoon’s win on the first day . of the Dunedin meeting suggested he would carry on as a winner, but his two subsequent efforts were very disappointing. He jumped better on Saturday than on the previous day, but was a beaten horse before the last fence was reached. Trainer’s Good, Day A feature of Saturday’s racing at Wingatui was the run of success enjoyed by the Wingatui trainer, A. E. Didham, He led in the winners of the first three races, two of them ridden by his apprentice. A. Anderson, and he trained and rode the winner of the seventh race. Two, Invincible and Strip, are owned by the trainer’s father, Mr E. N. Didham, of Dunedin. The feat of training four winners in a day is rare at a metropolitan meeting in New Zealand. The Dunedin Meeting The substantial increase in the totalisator turnover at the Dunedin meeting makes interesting reading at' this stage, but the figures are somewhat misleading. Last year’s meeting was adversely affected by the late cancellation of the King’s Birthday, the second day, as a public holiday, the attendance being very poor and the turnover reaching £14,040 only. This year, on a holiday, the totalisator figures and the gate receipts were doubled. The total gate receipts for this year’s meeting were £1985, against £llß2 last year, indicating that Dunedin racegoers appreciate the limited opportunities offered them of seeing thoroughbreds In action. It may be mentioned in making comparisons, that last year’s turnover was £33,230 below that of 1939, and this year’s total was £6305 less than that of two years ago.

At Last Fence Prince Flaneur would no doubt have fought out the finish of the Dunedin Steeplechase with Astral Flame and Golden Glow but for his mistake at the last fence. He is a most promising novice, and although a hard puller and a difficult horse to steady at or between his fences, he is likely to improve with racing. His next appearance will be at Oamaru. H. Register, his rider on Saturday, suffered a ricked back, but hopes to. be able to ride Prince Flaneur again at Oamaru, Golden Glow • Golden Glow put up a most creditable performance in the Dunedin Steeplechase. He was allowed ;to drift early, and when he nearly unseated his rider with a round to go he lost further ground. Then in the space of the three-furlong back stretch he was rushed from a bad last to be on terms with the two leaders at the last fence. It was not surprising therefore that he could not see the ordeal through. Golden Glow has always been considered » useful hunter only, but on this performance he is now entitled to be included in the higher grade. Fair Effort Slayer's • first appearance at Wingatui on Saturday aroused much interest, and although he was only fifth choice as a place proposition he was sent out win favourite. He did not jump some of his fences wejl, especially the double brushes, and this was no doubt due to his big weight and the holding going. He made a promising effort to get up to the leaders in the back stretch the second time, but was palpably in trouble long before the straight was reached. Slayer is booked for another trip to Trentham next month. Leg Trouble Surcoat was not produced at Wingatui on Saturday owing to suffering from lameness after his racing earlier at the meeting. Finishing On „ . Lights Out made a creditable effort In the concluding event at Wingatui, He was in last place, for three-fourths of the journey, and it was not till the straight was reached that he improved his position to any extent. He then put in a telling run which landed him In fourth place. He should make amends at the Groyfflouth meeting next Saturday. Expensive Flame Queen was going well turning for home in the Tainul /Handicap, and her supporters had reason to expect her to finish on. but when called upon she failed to respond and finished well back. West Coast tracks. apparently suit her better than the bigger courses and she is to accompany Lights Out to the Greymouth meeting. Now at Waahdyke Royal Lancer had two useful races at Wingatui. He was second choice over a mile and two furlongs and a half on the second day and finished in last place, while on Saturday he was the outsider of the seven-horse field in the mile King George Handicap, finishing a poor fifth. He was brought back to Washdyke yesterday by E. J. Ellis, who will train him from now until the Grand National meeting. Waitoru and Gay Boa accompanied Royal Lancer and will also be trained by Ellis. They will probably race at Ashburton. A Solid Performance St. Cloud made a game effort In winning over a mile on Satujday. She appeared likely to submit to Secret Flight half a furlong from home, but responded to a final call and snatched victory in the last stride, St, Cloud had the advantage of a 71b allowance and was ridden an excellent race by the Riccarton apprentice, V. Barrlngton.

emby, with Gnohlll. Confidant, and Sheeny handy. Lady Don could not carry on and Johnembv ran past her. Sheeny then put in a claim, and after a hard set-to outstayed Johnemby t( win going away. Gnohlll was a fair third two lengths In front of Confidant and Lady Don. Astral Flame’s Success Prince Flaneur drew out early In the Dunedin Steeplechase and led the field to the straight entrance, where he was joined by Astral Flame and Golden Glow. The trio took the last fence almost in line, but Prince Flaneur fell and Astral Flame drew out. He was challenged by Golden Glow, who weakened, and Panara then threw out a claim. Astral Flame, however, held on gamely to win comfortably from Panara. with Golden Glow a fair third, four lengths In front of Attire and Polar Star and Slayer next. Gay Boa fell seven furlongs from home, and Prince Flaneur crashed at the last fence, A Narrow Margin The King George Handicap resulted in a close finish between Secret Flight and St Cloud, who drew away from the remainder of the field in the last furlong. Boswell was the early leader from Secret Flight, St. Cloud, Cherokee, Peony Rose, Royal Lancer, and Aravane. and there was not much between Boswell and Secret Flight entering the straight, with a gap to St, Cloud, Cherokee, and Peony Rose, Secret Flight had Boswell beaten half a furlong from home, and was then challenged by St, Cloud. Nearing the post. Secret Flight looked to be holding St. Cloud, but the latter made a telling final effort and secured a head verdict, Boswell was a moderate third, three lengths In front of Cherokee and Royal Lancer. Opposition Outclassed Strip was sent out the staunchest favourlte of the day In the Talnut Handicap and had the easiest win of the meeting. He drew No. 2 and. beginning smartly, was soon well out In front troni Flame Queen. Top Row. and Auctor. Strip increased his lead as the race progressed, and entering the -tralght in front of Auctor and Flame Queen, drew right away, and was being eased up at the post. Auctor similarly beat Lazybones, with Top Row two lengths back In front of Flame Queen, who failed badly in the run home, „. . . Close Finish The closest finish of the meeting between three horses was staged in the Aidworth Hack Handicap. Taxpayer (led -through the back stretch from Ackemma, Royal Money, Safelight, and Mosglel. with Waka. Valcron, ana Lights Out bringing up the rear. . Taxpayer led into the straight from Baroa, Royal Money, Mosglel and Valcron, and a few chains from the post Raroa and then Valcron challenged Taxpayer. The two. crossed the line locked together, Raroa getting a last stride verdict from Valcron. who just shaded Taxpayer, Three lengths away Lights Out filled fourth a long finishing nm. Mosglel and Royal Money beaded the remainder.
