ARMY BEATS RANGERS TECHNICAL’S NARROW WIN A further Hurley Shield round was played on Saturday. Army caused a surprise by beating Rangers. Nomads showed Improvement to give Technical a hard game. Western was too good for Air Force, and Thistle, beat Celtic. Results: Thistle 2, Celtic 0; Western 4, Air Force 1; Army 1, Rangers 0; Technical 4, Nomads 3. . . . , 4V> Points so far in the championship, with the number of games in parenthesis, are: Technical (7) 13,’Western (7) 12, Thistle (7) 10, Army (6) 6. Celtic (7) 6, Rangers (7) 4, Air Force (6) 3, Nomads (7) 0. THISTLE V. CELTIC Thistle, in the main game at English Park, beat Celtic by 2 goals to 0. Celtic owed its loss, particularly In the first spell, when it practically dominated play, to the inability of the Inside forwards to find the net. The team worked particularly well up to the goal and then went to pieces at the finish. Thistle on the other hand played well defensively, and snapped up two chances in the second spell when the Celtic halves weakened. In the second spell the Celtic intermediates rarely gave their van any support on attack, with the result that Thistle began to have the lion’s share of midfield play. O’Rawe on the right flank played brilliantly for Celtic, and McMenamin and Tallott also put in some good work. The halves and backs played fair games, Munday in particular making a fine fob of marking McLennan. The best Thistle forwards were Fleete and White, but the main men were the half line, where the Sutherlands and Hall did much to pave the way for the side’s ultimate victory. A. Walker played another ’ sound game at right full-back. The teams were:— Thistle —Tyson; Walker, McCann; W. Sutherland, A. Sutherland, Hall; McLennan. McGrath, Fleete, Thomas. White. Celtic—McFaull; O’Connor, Nelson; J. Rundle, Shaw, Munday; O’Rawe, B. Bundle, Consedine, Tallott, McMenamin. P. Fleete and M. White scored Thistles goals. Referee: Mr W. Kelly. , WESTERN V. AIR FORCE Air Force, with the advantage of a gift goal, held its own against Western in the first spell of the early game at English Park, but the team let up badly after the resumption and Western soon had the issue beyond doubt. In the second spell the Air Force halves kept play in their own territory by staying behind with their full-backs instead of keeping play at their opponents’ end. Western’s form in the van line was poor early, but later on G, Smith and J. Smith put in some fine work to make up for the' earlier poor shooting. The halves

played well, while the full-backs had the opposing van well bottled up. Air Force showed some fine movements, but lacked finishing power. Haldane worked hard at inside left, while Harrison and .McMeekan were the pick of the halves. The backs, althpugh lacking a little experience, defended willingly. The teams were:— Western—Laing; Cawtheray, Graham; Anderson, Roberts, Aitken; Druker, Sturgess, G. Smith, J. Smith, Richards. Air Force —Andrews; Taylor, McCarthy; Todd, McMeekan, Harrison; Smith, Tweedie. Heywood, Haldane, Hughes. G. Smith (2), J. Smith, and Roberts, scored for Western. Air Force gained a goal when a Western player put the ball into his own net. Referee: Mr C. Hamilton. ARMY v. BANGERS The match at Hagley Park, in which Army defeated Rangers by 1 goal to 0, may rightly be termed a game of lost chances. With the chances offering, both teams should have been approaching double figures in their goal tallies. The inside men showed a curious lack of knowledge of the position of the goal in both spells. Mcßae, in goal for Army, played very well, making some good saves, and was given good support by McKenzie and Barclay. Everett and Meehan were prominent in the halves. Lucas, Chapman, and Thomas were the pick of the forwards. Rangers showed up in some promising movements with Dowker, Pattinson, and Sharr to the fore, without success. The Intermediate line played very well, while at the back McNaughton and Harbutt defended capably. The teams were:— Army—Mcßae; McKenzie, Barclay; McDonnell, Everett. Meehan; Thomas, Shirley, Lucas, Chapman, Hamilton. Rangers—Harbutt 1 , Styles, McNaughton; Cook, Stout, Lee; Barnes, Sharr, Lees, Pattinson, Dowker. Chapman scored the only goal for Army. Referee: Mr L. Doherty. TECHNICAL V. NOMADS

At Richmond Park, Technical beat Nomads by the odd goal in seven after an even encounter. Technical resurrected two veterans in Mulrson and Browne for the game, while Nomads brought up another two juniors. As a result the combination of both teams was interfered with, and this particularly was noticeable with the Technical side. The leaders had to fight every inch of the way for their four goals. Nomads showed some Improvement to give the leaders a good game, and further matches with the same side should put the team further up on the ladder. Douglas and Burnand were always in the picture, together with Adams and Davidson. Souter and Pickup were the pick of the halves, and the back men, Fleete and Samuels, put in some sterling work. The Technical players to show up were Dean, Weir, Harris, in the backs, and Milligan, and Smith in the forwards. The teams were:— Technical —Lambert; Dean, Mulrson; Weir, Harris, Cook; Storer, Smith, Milligan, Browne, and Hadley. Nomads—'Jackson; Samuels, Fleete; Souter, Pickup, Robson; Douglas, Adams, Davidson, Colin, Burnand. F. Milligan (3) and Browne scored for Technical. Douglas (2) and Davidson netted for Nomads.
