Mrs Edward Hammond (Clyde road) has returned home after a holiday visit to Auckland. Miss Olive Crooke (Victoria Mansions) has returned from a visit to Hanrrier Springs. Mrs H. F. Dykes (Weston road) has received advice from the Red Cross Society via America regarding the whereabouts of her aunt, Miss Gertrude Fisher, who is in Europe and who has many friends in Christchurch. The first message sent on March 3 said that Miss Fisher was in good health and was living at a convent in Angers, France. The second message, dated May 18. said that Miss Fisher had been released from an internment camp at Bcsancon. was convalescent, and had returned to Angers. Mrs Bruce Stronach (Fendalton) has returned from a visit to Mrs W. Hamilton. Mackenzie Country. Miss Melva Wake (Fendalton) will leave next week to spend several weeks in the south. Miss Nan Willis (Christchurch) has arrived in London after an uneventful three months’ voyage from New Zealand. She is resuming her work as a nurse. Last year Miss Willis escorted 82 children to New Zealand. She was in the Nestor when it was attacked by a Nazi raider, and she spent some time on Emirau Island. Miss Betty Sturgess (St. Albans) has returned home after visiting Mrs C. Wareham. “Wheatlands," Kaikoura. Miss Margaret Kane (Christchurch), who has been the guest of Miss Ethel Wareham. Kaikoura, has returned home. A dance was held at the St. Barnabas’ Hall, Fendalton. to augment funds for a sweet stall at the missionary fair to be held soon. Donald Budge, the tennis champion, is to be married this month to Miss Deordre Coriselman, of Eagle Rock. California. The village opera, “Hugh, the Drover,” by Vaughan Williams, was presented at the Canterbury Women’s Club last night by the Dixonians, directed by Mr John Thompson. Mrs J. Palk, leader of the club’s music circle, welcomed the visitors, and before supper was served Mrs R. J. McLaren, president of the club, on behalf of the large audience, thanked the performers for the pleasure they had given the members. Those taking part were Mrs Nelson Kerr, Miss N. Mrs Howard James (Christchurch) is visiting Mrs Maurice James, Dunedin. A party was arranged by members of the transport section of the General Service Corps in honour of the members who have joined the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force. Special mention was made of the work of Mrs O. Herdman and Miss B. Tonkin, who have been in charge of the truck section, and have given much time to the training of others Officers appointed to take their places were Mrs A. S. Geddes and Mrs P. O’Shea. A bring and buy was held in the Lincoln Public Hall in aid of St. Stephen’s Church Fund. Stallholders were as follows:—Produce, Mrs L. M. Fairbrother and Mrs G. Stoddart; variety, Mrs G. S. Peryman and Mrs J W. Stewart; cake, Mrs W. Greensiade and Mrs Mealen; sweets, Misses N. L. Peryman, N. Stewart, and Fairbrother (2); supper, Mesdames L. E. Smart and C. Schafflr, Misses Smart and Kimber. Miss S. McKee, president, presided over the monthly meeting of the committee of the Home Economics Association. when Mrs H, G. Livingstone was welcomed to the committee. Reports of work done during the month were received from Mrs E. C. Colville (needlecraft circle), Miss Wardle (drama). Mrs L. Rollings (National Council of Women), Mrs J. Lorimer Food Value League), and Mrs R. W, Borland for the Welcome Club. At Mrs Lorimer’s suggestion it was decided to inquire about giving help to the Women’s War Service Auxiliary. Preliminary arrangements were made for the handwork demonstration in July, and an afternoon party to be held to augment funds for patriotic work. A social and dance was organised by the Patriotic Associatipn dance committee at Lincoln to raise.funds. Mr J. W. Stewart’s orchestra supplied music for dancing, and Miss Marie Mills played an extra. Mr M. G. Ryan was the master of ceremonies. In the card room Mr C. H, Howell conducted flap five hundred. Successful players were Mr and Mrs T. O’Connor and Mi's A. Moreland. Another social and danbe at. Lincoln was arranged in honour of Private W. H. Dodd. Mr B. P. Moran was the master of ceremonies, and Mr J. W Stewart’s orchestra played dance music. Professor E. R. Hudson made a presentation to Private Dodd from his Lincoln friends. The lady editor of "The Press” gratefully acknowledges donation of 5s for the Queen Charlotte Hospital Fund and a box of clothing for the people of the distressed areas in England from “A Scottie," a pullover with polo collar from “Anonymous,” Ashburton, for a man in the Navy, a large parcel of knitted goods for people of the distressed areas from; an anonymous friend, and a parcel of papers from the W(.men's Auxiliary of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, New Brighton; also a parcel of wool for the Junior Red Cross from an’anonymous friend.
