THE WAITEMATA SEAT
National Party’s Decision The National Party does not intend to contest a by-election for the Waitemata seat, left 'vacant by the death in action of Captain W. J. Lyon, M.P., but will contest it at the general election later in the year, according to a statement to “The Press” last evening by the Leader of the Opposition (Mr S. G. Holland, M.P.). Mr Holland said that the decision, which had the support of the National Party in the electorate, had been reached as a hiark of respect to the memory of Captain Lyon. “The Government created a precedent by contesting the Waipawa seat in a by-election, in which the National Party retained the seat,” said Mr Holland. “But the National Party intends to • practise what it preaches, and we are strongly of the opinion that this is not the time for dividing the people. Accordingly we do not intend to contest the seat at a byelection. But in view of the close proximity of the general election I suggest that the filling of the seat should be held over till then.”
