WELLINGTON CARPENTERS UNION
ANTI-WAR RESOLUTION REJECTED (P.A.) WELLINGTON, May 8. By 232 votes to 96, a special meeting of this Wellington Carpenters and Joiners Union to-night dissociated, itself from an anti-war resolution carried at a meeting of the union at which there was an attendance of 10 members. By 153 votes to 96 the meeting agreed to remove from office those responsible for the resolution. In a recent circular ,to members, signed by Messrs C. Nattrass, E. Higgins, and W. F.' Sherwood, on behalf of the rank and file committee, it is stated that the meeting was called at the requisition of 100 financial members of the organisation. “The main purpose of the meeting,” states the,, circular, “is to consider, and if possible, rescind the resolution which was passed at a meeting of our union when only 10 members were present, and to remove from office those responsible for it. This resolution, which had for its purpose a proposal to withdraw New Zealand from the war and leave our mates overseas and our kindred in Great Britain in the cold, hns caused serious reflections to be made on Wellington carpenters and joiners generally. “For the last two or three weeks the carpenters on the various jobs have been greatly agitated and concerned about the action of this small number of men. We have decided to take steps in an effort to clear up the situation and salvage the good name of our organisation.”
