LARGE INCREASE IN BIRTHS

An increase in the number of births in the city, both for the month of April (when. compared with April, 1940) arid for the four months of the calendar year is shown in the vital statistics issued by the Christchurch office of the Registrar of Births, Deaths, ahd Marriages. Under the same' categories, deaths show a dcrease. For the four months ended yesterday there were 1009 births in the city, compared with 905 for the same period last year. There were 475 deaths in the {bur months of 1941, compared with 492 in the first four months of 1940. The figures for April, 1941, indicate that these tendencies are being maintained. The details follow:
