FINE OF £75 IMPOSED
FARMER INTOXICATED IN CHARGE OF CAR (F.0.0.R.) TEMUKA, April 29. Alexander Bain, aged 56, a farmer, of Temuka, was fined £75 and had his driver’s licence cancelled for a year for being intoxicated in charge of a car, by Messrs E. Blackmore, J.P., and G. Hancox, J.P., in the Magistrate’s Court to-day. Sergeant M. E. Hill said that while Constable Shannon was on duty at 6.15 on Monday evening he saw a car travelling north along the main road in an erratic manner. Overtaking the car at North Town Belt, he found the driver, Bain, in an advanced state of intoxication. A doctor had certified his condition. Bain had been convicted previously for a similar offence, Mr F. J. Smith, who appeared for the defendant, said that his client was farming in a big way and a car was essential for attending sales and travelling from farm to farm.
In fixing the penalty the bench said that it had due regard for the importance of primary production.
