MID-CANTERBURY PATRIOTIC TOURNAMENT
Good weather and true greens favoured competitors in the Mid-Canterbury women’s patriotic golf tournament, which was played on the Ashburtno course yesterday and resulted in about £2O being raised.
The senior championship resulted in a tie between Miss B. Morrow (Ashburton) and Miss M. Beadel (Christchurch), with good cards of, 85, 84—169, and 88, 81—169. Miss Morrow won on the count-back. The junior championship also produced a tie between Mrs H, Thompson and Mrs F. M. Smith, both of Ashburton, with scores of 93. 97—190. and 92, 98—190 respectively, Mrs Thompson won on the count-back. Best scores were:—

Buchanan, 7 down. Miss White-Parsons was awarded the trophy. Junior Bogey Match—Mrs G. Rod (Rotherham), 5 down; Mrs J. H, Chapman (Ashburton), 7 down; Mesdames H. Thompson (Ashburton), W. J. Heenan (Ashburton), and K. G. Archer, 9 down. The trophy was awarded to Mrs Chapman. Senior Medal Match—Mrs J. C. Cullman (Hagley), 85, 10—75; Miss B. Morrow (Ashburton), 88. 11—77; Mrs H. A. Vezey (Ashburton). 92, 15—77. Junior Medal Match—Mrs F. M. Smith (Ashburton), 92, 29—63: Mrs H. Thompson (Ashburton), 91, 17—74; Mrs G.' Reid (Rotherham), 101, 27—74; Mrs J. H. Chapman (Ashburton), 103, 29—74. Teams' Match—Ashburton No. 2 (Mesdames L. E. Carter 81, H, Thompson 74, J. H. Chapman 74. W. J. Heenan 77), total 306; Shirley No. 2, 325; Shirley No. 1 and Ashburton No. 1, 328. Mrs J. M. Mcßae (captain) presented the prizes. HORORATA CLUB A match played on the Terrace Station course by members during the week-end between the president’s and captain’s teams, resulted in « win for the president’s team.
Greek Credits Frozen— Mr Roosevelt to-day froze Greek credits and cash holdings in the United States. —Washington, April 28. postal Officers’ Thefts.— Thomas James Lanning, aged 32, a postman, who had pleaded guilty to seven charges of stealing postal packets, was sentenced by the Chief Justice (the Rt. Hon. Sir Michael Myers) to 15 months’ imprisonment with hard labour in the Wellington Supreme Court yesterday. John Melvin Smith, aged 18, was sent to a borstal institution for two years on five charges of theft a postal officer.—Press Association. b ■
