♦- OPENING OF SEASON It was reported at the meeting of the management committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union last evening that the Band of the Royal New Zealand Air Force will give a display at Lancaster Park on Saturday afternoon when the senior Rugby season will open with an inter-services match. The services of the band, which will visit Christchurch lor the Air Force recruiting campaign, have been offered for the occasion. The band will probably march to the park from Cathedral square. PLAYERS IN CAMP FACILITIES TO PLAY FOR CITY CLUBS Footballers in camp at Burnham not required for the Army team will be given special facilities, as far as possible, to travel to Christchurch on Saturday afternoons to play for their clubs, it was reported at the meeting of the management committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union last evening.

Captain C. A. Rattray said he had approached the camp commandant on the matter and was told that the men would be given the necessary leave so far as the exigencies of the service permitted. There were many difficulties in the way, but everything possible would be done to help the men. Reservations could be made on an early train reaching the city

A. Britten. Mr St. J, J. Dunne: The permit rules are waived for tire duration of the war. ASSOCIATION CHATHAM CUP NO MATCHES THIS SEASON (P.A.) WELLINGTON, April 29. Because of the difficulties teams would be faced with in travel and securing leave for players, the council of the New Zealand Football Association decided to-day not to proceed with Chatham Cup matches for the present season. It was agreed to carry on with the Football Association trophy matches, and that the pooling system adopted last year again operate. It was also decided to carry on with the Brown shield. There will oe no subsidy for. the Peter Dawson Cup matches. „ The question of schools’ tournaments was left in the hands of the districts concerned, consideration to be given to. them when applications to hold them are received. Affiliation fees for the season were fixed at £6 6s for major associations and £2 2s for minor associations.
