POSITION OF IRISHMEN
Sir, —Are Irishmen residing in New Zealand liable for military service, and is it compulsory f6r them to 'register? Three physically fit Irishmen employed in a certain establishment maintain that. Ireland being neutral, they cannot be called upon to fight. Several of us would be glad to know what the position is.—Yours, etc., SAUCE FOR THE GOOSE. April 2, 1941. [Answering this inquiry the Associate Minster for National Service (the Hon. D. Wilson) says: “Persons born in the Free State of Eire are naturalborn British subjects, and provided they are ‘residents’ of New Zealand within the meaning of the National Service Emergency Regulations, 1940, are liable to the provisions thereof. An Irishman resident in New Zealand, if a member of an enrolled class, must register and is liable for service with the armed forces.”]
