MAGISTRATE’S COURT
WEDNESDAY (Before Mr H. A. Young, S.M.) NAME SUPPRESSED, A youth whose name was suppressed was convicted of the theft of two cameras and was ordered to come up for sentence if called on within two years. Detective-Sergeant J. McClung said that the accused was in the city on holiday and took the cameras from the house where he was staying, to get money to pay his fare home. After consultation with the boy’s mother and the Probation Officer, the Magistrate said he would give the boy a chance as' it seemed unlikely that there would be any further trouble. An order was made for the return of the cameras to the owners. FAILING TO PAY TRAM FARE Harry Ernest Herbert was charged with failing to pay his tram fare from New Brighton to Christchurch on December 27. Mr A. W. Brown, for the Tramways Boafd, said that the offence was worse than usual, in that the accused, after being written to three times, produced a return ticket bought in February. Herbert was fined ss, ordered to pay costs 14s, and solicitor’s fee £1 Is. MILK VENDOR FINED Muriel Wallace (Mr R. A. Young) faced two charges. Mr A. W. Brown, prosecuting, said that two samples had been bought from the defendant, one containing 12 oer cent, of water, the other 15 per :ent. It had been found subsequently that a piece of rubber hosing In the moling plant was perished and leaking. Mr Young said that his client had never purposely added water, and had now replaced the hose. The Magistrate said that as all the :osts, including solicitors’ and analyst’s :ees, came to £6 6s, a fine of £1 would dc sufficient, and this would be imDosed on one charge, with the costs m the other.
