HOSPITAL WORK IN LONDON

The difficulties under which work is carried on during air raids by Queen Charlotte’s Maternity Hospital, in London, is described in a letter which has been received in Christchurch. In making an appeal for support the letter states that after months of air raids this is the only large maternity hospital left in London. “We have to care for our soldiers’, sailors’ and airmen’s wives,” it is stated. “These mothers, unable for family reasons to evacuate, are as brave as their husbands, while our nurses (in steel helmets) often reach them amid bombs and gunfire, driving with anti-shrapnel mattresses on the roof.’’ Assistance is given to those whose homes have been destroyed by bombs, and children are looked after up to the age of five years. The hospital has been caring for the wives of service men since the time of Nelson, dealing with 5000 cases between 1914 and 1918,
