TURF GOSSIP Easter Racing; at Riccarton The Canterbury Jockey Club last evening received acceptances and final payments for the first day of its. autumn meeting on Easter Monday, and also final payments for the Great Autumn Handicap on the following day. There was only' one surprise defection from the Great Easter Handicap, and this was the Hastings gelding, Rakanui, who, since winning the Hawke’s Bay Cup recently, came into strong favour for the Riccarton event. He does not appear to be engaged at any other of the Easter fixtures, and evidently is to be given a short respite. Boloyna’s withdrawal would also cause a little disappointment, after his success at Otautau last week. All of those left in the Champagne Stakes have stood their ground, and indications point to all being paraded, in which case an outstanding race for two-year-olds will be Witnessed. Enrich appears as an acceptor for the Great Easter Handicap, but has been withdrawn from the Great Autumn, for which he was a strong fancy He is. however, engaged in the Templeton Handicap, six furlongs, on the second day. Not Out, Lazybones, Areas, arid Ferriby were taken out of the Sockburn Handicap, but Not Out remains in the Great Easter and Ferriby is in the Autumn Plate. Actually the defections for the first programme number only 27. and indications point to the meeting being one of the most successful for many years Dunedin Jockey Club At the monthly meeting of the Dunedin Jockey/Club last week a motion of condolence with the relatives of the late Mr G. A. Kain was passed, ft was decided to subscribe £IOOO to the New Zealand Government War Loan. >953. Dates for the new season’s racing were applied for as follows; —Spring meeting, Saturday and Monday, October 11 and 13. 1941; summer meeting. Friday and Saturday. December 26 and 27. 1941; autumn meeting, Saturday and Monday, February 23 and March 2. 1942 (provisionally); winter meeting. Saturday. May 30. Monday and Saturday. June 1 and 6. 1942. A Long Career The Night Patrol, who was imported from England by Lord Stradbroke, the Governor of Victoria, recently, died in a stall at the Melbourne saleyards. In all. The Night Patrol won £16,000. and was sold for the stud for 10,000 guineas, later being resold for 1500 guineas. At the age of 23 years he was again to be put up for auction. A Strong Pair T. R George seems to hold a strong hand in hte Canterbury Jockey Club's Champagne and Challenge Stakes with Pay Roll and Corn Prince, who wnl be ridden ,by W. Broughton and S. Waddell respectively.

Change of Ownership The Great Easter Handicap candidate, Circular Note, has been sold by Mrs R. C. Thornton, to Mrs F. Blewitt, Wellington; at a price reported as 1000 guineas. Circular Note, who is working very well at Trentham, will be t'id&en in the Great Easter by W. Broughton, and his stablemate. Kentucky, by S. Waddell.

A Promising Candidate When Little Robin finished a good second to Dynasty in the Wanganui Cup ho carried 61b more than has been alktted him in the Great Autumn Handicap. and his performance should ee 'quite satisfactory who have supported him to win the big mue and a halt race at Riccarton. Little Rolu.i has done a lot of racing this .season. having started 23 times for four v'u*s. five seconds, and four thirds. He is a six-year-old gelding by Resinous from Little Thrush, by Birkdnle from Ine Boniform* mare Pretty Girl, and, like Dynasty, is a first foal.

Veteran Jumper . . _ s .Though now rising 13 years old. Trisox will again have the honour ol carrying No?l saddle cloth in the Great Western Steeplechase, at Riverton. With the same saddle cloth last year, he looked a certain winner two furlongs from homo, but unfortunately broke down before coming to the last fence, and though he practically finished on three legs, was beaten by less than a length by Ballybnt. Insox looked better at the Birchwood Hunt meeting than he did at this time last year, says the Dunedin “Star, and being such a good jumper and natural stayer, must be given a big chance m next week’s race.

Sydney'ltems A cablegram frqm Sydney states that J. T. Jamieson said that High Caste, who was kicked before the start of the Chipping Norton Plate, was still sore and it would be a couple of days before it was known whether the horse would be fit to run in the Doncaster Handicap for which he is the favourite. Mr R. Stewart, owner of Beau Vite, blamed interference for his horse’s failure in the Chipping Norton Plate, but the jockey, E, McMenamin, said Beau Vite could have escaped trouble had he been speedy enough. ' Beau Vite was squeezed a little at the halfmile. but only because he was not fast enougiTto take advantage of an opening. He did not race like a champion at any part, said McMenamin. Beau Vite carries the mark where he struck the running rail, but appears to be sound. Mr Stewart said Beau Vite would do better at Easter and intends to bring the horse back to Australia for the Melbourne Cup. Represents Stamina The Wanganui Cup winner, Dynasty, is by Posterity—Drawl by Limond— Drax by Spearmint—Suncroft by Sunstar—Miramonde, by Desmond, the sire of Limond. Drawl is a sister to Spiral. Posterity is by Son-in-Law—Hemlock, bv Spearmint—Keystone 11, by Persimmon. Dynasty is inbred to Hampton, Carbine, and St. Simon, and has a pedigree representing stamina. His form has not, however, been particularly inspiring this season, although the Wanganui Cup marked his fourth win, preceded by five unplaced performances. Dynasty displayed promising form by winning a double at the Mahawatu Cup meeting, when he won over»nine and 10 furlongs. Racing and War Commenting on the question of racing during the waL Lord Harewood, in a letter to “The Times’’ defines the mainteahce of the English thoroughbreds’ supremacy, and racing’s entertainment value as reasons for racing’s continuance. He adds: “Those interested in racing are not pressed into indulgence of their hobby when it conflicts with the national interests. The Jockey Club stewards .are in close tduch with the Government departments, There is no difficulty in carrying out what is conceived to be their duty without overstepping the bounds imposed by the Government. .They will continue to be guided by Cabinet’s wishes. Cabinet seems the only body with a lull knowledge of aiTthe facte, 1 *

Answers to Correspondents D.E.W., Greymouth—Royal Surprise (V. Alborn). Three Tens (R. Young), Great Blaze (C. King).

Argument, Oamaru —Au Revoir Handicap. Forbury Park, January 28, 1939. Blair Athol 1, Pot Luck 2, War Buoy 3. Nominations Missed • The owner of Toceetie missed the nominations for the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s Easter meeting,' and the mare’s Easter activities will be confined to the Hawera Trotting Club’s meeting. Toceetie put up a great race in the Durbar Handicap at Ashburton, and In ordinary dr-

cumstances would probably have won, for the victor, Zincali, was forced to a world's race record to win. In her latest race Toceetie was compelled to do most of the pace-making over the last mile and she did well to finish second. At Hawera she will be asked to concede bigger starts than at Addington, but such a consistent mare should pay her way.

A Promising Pacer ' All Gallant is one of the most improved pacers in commission, and the manner of his win in the Harvest Handicap at Ashburton was impressive. While it was generally thought that his stable-mate- Statuette was the better pacer, All Gallant—a year older—proved definitely superior. He looks like developing into a winner of the best class races. Zincali

Zincali, who was declared ineligible for the Easter Handicap at the Metropolitan meeting, was penalised from 24 yards to 36 yards, in the Belfast dicap, and his connexions prefer to race him in the All Age Stakes, in which he is set to give away 36 yards over a mile and a quarter. The Belfast Handicap field includes several, useful pacers, but the recent running 6f Zincali suggests that he would have had a royal chance in this class of race.

All Age Stakes v Although the Metropolitan Trotting Club reserved the, right to select the horses from those nominated to start in the All Age Stakes it has apparently accepted a field of 16, too many for a race that was supposed to be confined to the befct horses of the different ages. The state of the field at present shows that six three-year-olds, three four-year-olds, and seven horses of five years and more are engaged. Possibly the task of fining the fielg* down was not appreciated by the c&unittee re-

sponsible, but a field of 16 is a bit too big for all except the limit horses. From Auckland ' The Auckland-ownech Uenuku is among the acceptors for the Belfast Handicap ,on the opening day of the meeting at Addington, and another North Island pacer in Bold Venture will add interest to the race. Unhoppled Trotters Two impressive wins by Gerfalcon at the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting find him conceding up to 60 yards to good-class trotters in the Autumn Handicap at Addington. On the openday at Hutt Park Gerfalcon received 12 yards from Dark Hazard, and on the second day the pair met on even terms, Gerfalcon winning with ease on both occasions. Dark Hazard will now receive 12 yards from Gerfalcon, and if he settles down to trotting from the start he may reverse positions with M. Holmes’s good trotter. Both, however, will have a big task ahead of them to defeat Bush Laddie, who will be racing on his favourite track. Bronze Eagle Two brilliant wins by Bronze Eagle at Wellington are likely to bring him into favour for the Express Handicap. 4min 34sec class, in which he is opposed by only eight other horses. On a dry track he will need to improve a good deal on his 4min 33sec assessment, but he is quite capable of doing this. Bronze Eagle has improved a good deal in the last few months and his trainer, C. Tasker, is entitled to every reward for the patient policy he has adopted with the chestnut pacer. Bracketed

Although 16 horses remain in the All Age Stakes there will be several brackets in the betting on the totalisator. -These will include: Statuette and All Gallant, trained by F. C. Dunlevey, and Marlene and Plutus from C. S. Donald’s stable. ,
