RACING AND TROTTING

HOTELKEEPERS

turf gossip

Reminder Nominations for the Greymouth Jockey Club's Easter meeting will close at 9 p.m. on Saturday.

Encouraging Form Surcoat, winner of the Gardner Memorial Hunt Steeplechase at Invercargill on Saturday, is still owned by F. D, Jones, who purchased him as a young horse, and early last season leased him to the Southland owner-trainer, P. J. Boyle. Surcoat was having his first race on Saturday since last season, and led from start lo finish, although he had to be ridden out to hold off Night Scout, by Lord Warden from Night Myth, owned by Mr R. Acton-Adams, who is at present living in Western Australia. Surcoat is an aged gelding by Philamor from Windshield, dam of Shatter and Protector, and is one likely to win some big cross-country events during the jumping season. A Grey Winner Bantas winner by eight lengths of the Birchwood Novice Handicap at Invercargill last week, is a grey gelding by Nigger Minstrel from an Obsono mare, and is trained by R. E. McLellan for Mr A. F. Speight.

At Westport * Riccarton stables will be represented by the following horses at the Westport Jockey Club’s meeting, opening on Saturday:—Miltiades, Philibun, Winchelsea, Cymric, Flame Queen, Aggravate, Rebel Star, Cape Gabo, Areas, Roman Son, Epic, Skyrena, Financlere. Roy Bun, Kilrobe, and Ferriby. Several Riccarton riders will attend the meeting, including A. E- Ellis, L. J. Ellis, C. WilsOn, A. Stokes, C. Fox and M. Hollands.

Leading Horseman W. Broughton has been offered the ride on Royal Chief in the C.J.C. Great Autumn Handicap, but he will most likely remain on Happy Ending. The latter’s trip, however, is not absolutely certain, though probable. Broughton will be on Circular Note in the Great Easter Handicap. Divided Team T. George will have his team spread out at Easter. Serenata will be at Auckland, Kentucky, Circular Note and Pay Roll at Riccarton, and the rest will be divided between Feilding and Wairarapa. Unlikely Visitor

Poutatau was booked for the C.J.C. Great Easter, but after his defeats last week this trip may be cancelled. His stable mates Blandisher gnd Gay Genet are also engaged at Riccarton.

The Breweries can only supply you with THE BEST OF BEER AND STOUT. It is your concern to'maintain its good qualities by installing a MODERN CONTROLLING AND DISPENSING SYSTEM, as supplied to numerous Leading Hotels, Military Camps, and Aerodromes.

First Start High Class, due to make his debut at Awapuni to-day, is a two-year-old gelding by Bulandshar from that useful Paper Money—Equitas mare.Equitant. He is owned by Mr T. A. Duncan. Riding at Awapuni Riding engagements announced for Wanganui include:—B. H. Morris, Belle Cane, Foxiana; W. Broughton, Miss Phaleron, Half Crown, The Monarch, Little Robin, Surveyor-General; H. Wiggins, Impenum, Mittie, Flying Hawk; A. Midwood, Gay Fox, Counter, Vivid Night; P. Atkins, Nlghtward, Scandal Parlato; S, Waddell, Kevin, Beau Ciel. Fcilding Cup

Nominations as follow have been received for the Feilding Cup Handicap, of £6OO, one mile and a quarter, to be run on Easter Monday:—Royal Star 11, Friesland, Kotua, Ruatitl, Dynasty, Colonel Bogey, Hunting Cat, Piastre, Alexcelia, The Monarch, Mittie, Filbert, Happy Ending, Pearl of Asia, Gladynev, Kilometre, Aurora’s Star, Gold Bridge, Amigo, Gay Fox,- Authoress, Sir Crusoe, Last Acre, Notium, Old Bill, Rustem.

Result of Raffle The net amount handed over to the patriotic funds in connexion with the art union for the thoroughbred colt, War Effort, was £2184 10s 6d. The Wellington Racing Club easily headed the list of sales of tickets, £435 having been handed over by that club, and the Waikato Racing Club was next with £203 7s 6d.

Staying Prospects The Hastings Hack Cup winner, Katesbrldge, is a filly likely to go on to better things, as she shows every sign of being a real stayer. She was responsible for winning form in the Poverty Bay district, where she was bred, before joining J. M. Cameron’s stable, from which she was having her first starts last week. Katesbridge is the first foal of her dam, and is by the successful Foxbridge from Veloce, by Hunting Song—Oppidan, by The Rand—Etona, by Castor—Lady Walmsley. by Musket—Mersey.

Spendthrift A notable success was scored by Spendthrift in winning at Invercargill on Saturday at his first attempt over fences. He has won over hurdles, among sprinters, and now over country. Spendthrift is by Paper Money from Fleet Lady, by Anomaly—Miss Fleetham, by Fleetham—Miss Signal, by Signalman—Miss Stent; The Smuggler and other useful horses belong to the same family.

Successful Division Second-season horses have proved fairly successful ip the Great Autumn Handicap. The race was first nun in 1874, and since then 22 three-year-olds have been first past the post. Bon Ton won with 8-4 m 1913, Kilboy with 8-10 in 1917. Punka with 7-12 in 1919, Bonnie Winkie with 7-10 in 1922, Nightmarch with 8-5 in 1929, and Tauramai with 8-5 in 1935. A three-year-old at the back end of the season may strike the pinnacle of his form. In this year’s race Enrich looks rather formidable at 7-13 for a three-year-old capable of winning the New Zealand Derby with 8-10 in 2min 31 3-ssec.

Change of Venue For the first time in its long history the Wanganui Cup this year will not be run on the Wanganui course. Because the Wanganui Jockey Club’s property is now being used by the military authorities, a change of venue to the Manawatu Racing Club’s course at Awapuni has been made for the autumn fixture to-day and on Saturday, and the Cup will be decided on the same ground as the Manawatu Cup. though over a quarter-mile less distance. As the distance of the Wanganui Cup last year and the year before was one mile four and a quarter furlongs, it is Surprising that this year’s race was not kept to one mile and a half, for which there is a barrier at Awapuni, but apparently the club considered the shorter journey would prove more popular with owners.

TROTTING NOTES

For Military Service The call to military service will claim several prominent drivers and trainers in the near future, the number including T. H. Gunning, R. Messervey, and L. A. Wells. Gunning drove at Hutt Park on Saturday, and it is understood that he and Messervey will be in the sulkies at Ashburton next Saturday.

Tack to Driving A. Hendrlcksen, a well-known reinsman some years ago, and winner of the Great Northern and the New Zealand Derbies, the New Zealand Cup (twice). National Cup, and Timaru Cup, has decided to re-enter the list of professional drivers, and he will probably t; driving at Ashburton on Saturday. For some time past, Hendricksen has been associated with W. J. Doyle’s stable at Leeston. Classic Racing

For many years the Ashburton Trotting Club has built its popularity on its classic races, and though support in the early years was not encouraging, the result has been very satisfactory. The acceptance of three-year-olds in the Futurity Stakes shows this up in bold relief, and this should be one of the best races seen for a long time. While Special Force has shown himself to be an outstanding pacer of his age, he has not done a great deal of racing, and several recent improvers may make him do better than before. Not the least formidable is Positive, who, under P. Gallagher’s care, is a stable-mate of Special Force. At Wellington this gelding gave away 12 yards to older and more experienced pacers, and in a finish that demanded resolution he won from Scapa Flow and Surprise Potts. This was on a heavy track, and the task was a big one for a three-year-old. On the second day Positive raced in better class over a mile and a half, and again he won very nicely, those behind him including Gold Chief (conceding 36 yards), Gleam, and Barbara Scott, Positive looks the type to improve with racing. He is a good, hardy type, and his race with the cracks of his age on Saturday may be full of interest. Drumoak Since being brought from Southland, the Worthy Bond gelding Drumoak has not done much racing, and in his last start r' the New Brighton meeting in February he may have been unlucky when an accident in the Newall Handicap put him but of court. At Ashburton ■ Saturday, he is handicapped on 30 yards behind in the Rakaia Handicap, and from behind a big field of smart pacers his task is a difficult one. Luck in the running in this race may play a big part, but on the limit are several pacers with more speed than the average. An Improver

Sbeclal Agent, one of the entries for the Improvers' Handicap at Ashburton. is a four-year-old gelding by Jack Potts—Emily de Oro by Rey de Oro— Doraldina, Special Agent ran third to Joan Conquest and Vera de Oro in the Clarevllle Hahdlqap on the second day of the Wellington meeting. This represented a very fair effort, Certlssimus

The crack three-year-old, Certisslmus, will be set his biggest task when he tackles the trotters in the Stewards’ Handicap at Ashburton, and the limit horses will only have to Improve on their Smin 34sec assessments Jto make his task a difficult one. To several of those opposed to him at Ashburton, Certlssimus conceded at Timaru starts up to 36 yards and while not at his best, he won. If hje i is to Jiave a chance against the cracks at Addington, Certlssimus should be « warn favourite at Ashburton,
