OBITUARY
CAPTAIN E. R. LOWE (Special) WELLINGTON, April 2. Captain E. R. Lowe died suddenly at his home at Lyall Bay to-day. He was born at Harlech, Wales, on September 21, 1885, and as a youth served in sail and steam vessels before qualifying for his officers’ certificate. For a period he served as second mate of the barque Manurewa in the intercolonial trade, and later in a similar capacity in the Tathra in the South Sea Islands trade. . • He entered the employ of the Union Steam Ship Company, Ltd., in 1912 as third officer of the Karon, being promoted to second officer of the Flora in 1914, and finally to chief officer of the Kamona in 1917. He later served as chief officer of the Tahiti in the San Francisco service. His first command was the Kattawa. His later commands included the Korormko, Gpihi, Kaimai, Corinna, Kanna, Waimarino, Waipiata, Poolta, Tamahine, Kaimiro. Karepo, Kiwitea, Wingatui, and Korowai. Captain Lowe was on holiday leave from the Korowai when he died. The ensigns and house flags of all Union Company vessels in port were flown at half-mast to-day.
