TURF GOSSIP

Reminder Nominations for the Oamaru Jockey Club’s autumn meeting will close at 8 p.m. next Wednesday. The sum of £2310 will be given in stakes over the two days, the principal events being the Oamaru Cup, of £323, one mile and a quarter, and the Gardiner Memorial Handicap, of £2OO, over the same distance, At Molukarara To-day

The Banks Peninsula Racing Club’s meeting to-day will command widespread attention, as several good class horses will be competing, and many of them are likely to be seen out at Trentham later in the month. The programme will open with the Juvenile Stakes, for non-winners at the time of starting, and some smart sprinters will be saddled up, including the two-year-olds Bascule, Blue Bouquet, Hindus, Miss Saone, Sir Grey, and Willow Wood, while the older division will be ably represented by Ann Mie, My Abbey, Arctic Dawn, Haughty Lad, and Citizen. This should be a closely contested race, and speculation will be widely distributed. High-weight Conditions The Terawhera High-weight Hack Handicap has drawn a useful field, including the jumpers Streamline and Jewish Lad. Blue Abbey’s form at Wingatui entitles him to serious consideration, but he may be reserved for his later engagement. The Cup Field All of the nine acceptors for the Peninsula Cup are expected to parade, and one of the best contests in the history of the popular event can be looked forward to. Wardess has stood up to recent hard racing very well, and although she failed at Wingatui to race up to her Trentham form, she cannot be left out. Doria will be making her first attempt over a mile and a quarter, and her win over a mile at Wingatui suggested that the ordeal may not be beyond her. Winning Rival has been suffering from slight soreness since Wingatui, and the hard ground will not favour her. Not Out will no doubt be in keen demand. He has been working well since he won the Craven Plate, and the distance should not trouble him. Iceland Spar is another who would appreciate a softer track, but such a solid stayer has always to be reckoned with. Entail, The Wrecker, and Glenora Boy have fair chances only, but Knight Commander is a decided possibility. He was definitely unlucky at Wingatui, and although he may not have beaten Trench Fight, he would have filled second place. The value of the stake to the winner will be £3OO, so that there will not be any allowances. Hack Events -

The Ahuriri Hack Handicap bears a very open appearance, and more than half of the field will be entitled to notice, while in the Forsyth Hack Handicap investors will be faced with another intricate problem. The Open Sprint Interesting contestants in the Kinloch Handicap will be Don’t Forget, Paper Note, and Shikari, who have not been seen out for sortie time, and Areas will be having his first race since joining his present stable. A fast-run six furlongs should be recorded, and it would not be surprising if the light-weights, King’s Toast, Synthetic, and Aggravate, raced prominently. At Hokitika

The recent meeting of the Westland Racing Club was one of the most successful and enjoyable in late years, and a small profit should be recorded. The racing was interesting throughout, and the improvement effected to the track since the previous meeting was the subject of much favourable comment. Novice Contestants

Some little-known horses will parade in the Juvenile Stakes at Motukarara to-day. Arctic Dawn is a three-year-old colt by Defoe from Aurora Borealis, and is owned by Mr J. H. Grigg; Bloss is a three-year-old filly by Nightmarch from Miss Pur-au, and is owned by Mrs H. Gardiner; Pride of Campne is a three-year-old filly by British Empire from Traysock, and is owned by Mr J. T. Johnson: Red Ace is-a three-year-old gelding by Cockpit from an Ace of Diamonds mare, and is owned by Mr V. Neale; Bascule is a two-year-old colt by Foxbridge from Rose Latour, and is the property of Mr H, D. Greenwood; Lindus is a two-year-old gelding by Colossus from Greymist, and races in the same -interests as The Wrecker; Miss Saone is a two-year-old filly by Blahdonian from Saone, and is owned by Mr J, Porter: and Sir Grey is a two-year-old by Friday Night from Grey Lass, and is owned by Mr J. Munro. Unusual Mishap ,

Select, a promising two-year-old by Portoftno, from Unique, broke both forelegs while galloping in company with Blissful on the course proper at Epsom (Victoria). Select suddenly faltered. and one of his forelegs snapped Within a few strides the other foreleg also snapped. Select turned a somersault.

Change of Stables Mr W. Devon has made anothei change in Sydney, and has transferred his horses O Rakio, Feminhero. and Woortongi from W. McGee's stables at Randwick. to those of G. Allen, at Warwick Farm. Early Bird and Bogilla. who were trained by McGee, and are now spelling, will be sent to Allen at the termination of their holiday.

TROTTING NOTES

Reminder Acceptances for the Timaru Trotting Club's meeting close on Tuesday at 9 p.m. Still Going One of the most popular and consistent pacers to race in New Zealand in recent years, Logan Derby is still in commission in Australia, and latest reports suggest that he is racing as well as ever. Speedy Maiden While Swagger Jack has yet to win a race, this novice pacer has the ability to hold his own successfully in useful company, and when he learns to settle down smartly from the barrier he will have little difficulty in winning races. This season Swagger Jack has been placed in nearly all his races, usually after a poor beginning, and more favourably served at the start of the Wairewa Trot Handicap at the Banks Peninsula Racing Club’s meeting today, he will be expected to be prominent. Death of Peterwah While being exercised on the track at Ascot early this month Peterwah collapsed and died, repons 'the "Trotting Record.” Foaled in America m 1921, Peterwah was imported to New Zealand by Mr R. C. Fisken, and he proved a great success as a racehorse, earning more than £6OOO in stakes and taking a two-mile record of 4mm 23 4-ssec against a field of pacers. Some seasons ago he was purchased for stud duties in Victoria, but he was not the success anticipated in this department. While he left a number of good performers, mostly trotters, in New Zealand, his progeny have not been greatly to the fore. However, Peterwah will be remembered as a brilliant trotter and as a fine horse. He was never beaten m the Melbourne Show in the stallion class, and in Adelaide he earned similar honours.

Great American Pacer

Single G, “'the horse that time forgot,” died recently in the United States of America at the age of 30. He got his name from a white mark, representing the letter G on his forehead. Single G was one of the world s greatest pacers. His best time, Imm SSJsec, was not remarkable when compared with Billy Direct’s Imin Sasec of Dan Patch’s Imin 551 sec, but it was his consistency and durability that won him lasting fame. His total winnings were £24,000, a record for races, although other horses earned more by augmenting their totals in exhibitions. Single G raced for 14 seasons, and in the last seven never failed to turn in a two-minute mile, the last at the age of 15. Altogether. Single G contested 154 races (involving 434 heats), of which he won 98 and was second in 34. Only five times in 14 years was he out of the money. He won 230 heats in 2min lOsec or faster, 134 in 2min ssec or better. 54 in 2mm 2sec or under, 32 in 2min Isec or faster, and 12 in 2min or better. He was the first horse to win two heats in a race in faster than Imin 59sec, his figures being Imin 581 for the first heat and Imin 58Jsec for the third. Going to the stud at ’the age of 17, Single G sired Dick Reynolds, Imin 59Jsec, Doctor H. Imin 59Jsec, Green Valley. 2min, and Single Stive, 2min. His only representative to race in New Zealand is Bill B, Former Champion

War Buoy figures among the entrants for the principal handicap on the Timaru Trotting Club’s programme, and it will be interesting to see how this former good pacer performs. He started in three races early this season without showing a great deal of his early brilliance and his efforts over a period have suggested that he is a spent light. War Buoy, now a 10-year-old, commenced racing in 1933 as a two-year-old, winning at his first start and then going on to record a victory in the New Zealand Sapling Stake in 3min 21 3-ssec. He maintained his unbeaten record the next season, when he won four races, including the New Zealand Derby in 3min 16 l-ssec. At the end of his five-year-old racing he had a record of 14 wins, four seconds, and a third for 19 starts, but since then he has done little of note, winning three races and being placed on eight occasions in 35 outings, and his prospects of returning to form are not bright.
