RACING AND TROTTING

TURF GOSSIP • Reminder Acceptances for the Banks Peninsula Racing Club’s summer meeting will close at 5 p.m. to-day at the office of the Canterbury Jockey Club. Soldier Horseman P. Spratt, who is at present in camp at Burnham, intends to be present at Saturday’s meeting, and will be available to accept mounts. Track Work at Riccarton The Riccarton tracks were keut busy yesterday morning, but except for some galloping by horses to race t Motukarara on Saturday, the work was not of a very interesting nature. All of the fast work was done on the plough, and as usual it provided fast going. Wild Fox, Shikari, and Willow Wood were each given strong work along the back stretch, and then sprinted home three furlongs. The has evidently overcome his recent trouble, and should show up at Motukarara. Sovereign Lady, assisted by Muffler for seven furlongs, covered a mile in Imin 44 l-ssec. the first half in 52 2-ssec. * Blue Bouquet and the English-bred Miss Cyone ran five furlongs in Imin ssec, after taking 11 4-ssec for the first furlong and 37sec for the first three. The latter shows a marked turn of speed. Erambie and Prudent Prince were companions over six furlongs in Imin 17sec. the first three in 36 2-ssec. My Abbey easily beat Topple over half a mip in 50 3-ssec. and Portadown ran the same distance in 53sec under restraint. Not Out and Alias covered a mile in Imin 46sec, the first half in 52 4-5 sec. Iceland Spar and Doria were each given strong work with sprints home. Areas and Cymric reeled off half a mile in 49 3-ssec. The former, who is partial to soft ground, should be useful during the winter racing, Greenbank ran six furlongs in Imin 18 2-ssec, Knight Commander and Blue Abbey following in Imin 18sec. Knight Commander is likely to be in keen demand for the Peninsula Cup. Palo Alto. Haughty Lad. and Box On finished in that order at the end of half a mile in 51sec. On No. 7 Grass Nightglass ran half a mile in 48 3-5 sec. and Princess Minerva covered six furlongs in Imin 19 2-ssec. Promising Efforts Among those given useful sprints on the plough were Bascule by Fox,bridge, and Pennywhistle by Myosotls, who ran half a mile in 51 4-ssec, with the former in front at the end. Square Cut by Winning Hit from Grey Vixen, by Hunting Song, attracted attention by going freely over half a mile. Lindus. trained by F. Holmes, sprinted three furlongs on the plough in 36 3-ssec. This three-year-old Colossus gelding will contest the maiden event at Motukarara. Ineligible The success of Lady Derby, Master Flash and. Sweet Mystery over the week-end make them ineligible to compete in the Motukarara Juvenile Stakes but they were nominated also for other hack races. A Young Trainer G. H. Murfitt, who recently was granted a trainer’s licence, has two horses in work for his employer, Mr Ered Armstrong. One is Enticing, by Nightmarch from Entreaty, who had two races in the' spring, and the other is a two-year-old filly by Friday Night from Gold Paper, by Paper Money. Both are well forward, and should be soon seen in public. Rehandicapped After their successes at Hokitika on Monday, Master Flash has been re : handicapped to 1-13 in the Ahuriri Hack Handicap at Motukarara, and S.weet Mystery to 7-10 in the Forsyth Hack Handicap. Patience Rewarded By his win at Hokitika on Monday, Aggravate recorded his first success for his present owners, Messrs H. A. Rhind and H. Nurse, since’they took him over from Mr M. O’Brien some time back while Sweet Mystery registered the first success of her career Vfhen she won. A Valuable Purchase Cillas has started only twice since he was purchased by the "Bombay trainer, A.' Higgins, and he has won £llOO, which is more than the sum paid for nlm. After he was sold he was transferred to H. E. Gray’s stable. Cillas is a black three-year-old by Diatomous from Monanui. Diatomous was a sprinter pure and simple, and his sire Diacquenod was a progenitor of- speed, but Spangle (dam of Diatomous) was a sister to Nightmarch; aqd Monanui, dam of Cillas, was by Te Monanui who was a good stayer, the Auckland Racing Club Handicap being among the races he won. Superex When Superex won the Owhiri Hurdles at Wingatui he registered his first victory for nearly three years. This was gained in a highweight handicap at Oamaru, and his last previous success as a jumper was achieved at Invercargill in January, 1938. He did «ot race at all last season, however. The Gloucester Cup The Duke of Gloucester Cup race will probably be run on the first day of the South Canterbury Jockey Club's May meeting. The programme committee has recommended that the event, which is for amateur riders, shall be open to torses which have started three times in a hurdle race or steeplechase, or which are eligible for hack races. The distance will be a mile and a quarter, and the minimum weight 10-7. The stake proposed is £l5O, in addition to which the owner of the winner will hold the cup lor one year and receive a miniature valued at £ls 15s. Another miniature cup is provided for the rider of the winning horse. Dunedin Cup Winner Doubleack, winner of the Dunedin Cup, is a member of a family that has done well in the far south during 1 the last 30 years. It is not, however, a southern family in origin, but was one of the lines from which the late Mr S. H. Gollan, the owner of Moifaa and so many other notables, arid the late Mr Martin J. Baird bred in the late years of last century and the early years of this. Mr Gollan maintained his Mangatarata Stud in Hawke’s Bay for several years after he himself*had practically settled in England, but the stud was finally dispersed in January, 1910. A Southland agent secured sev-

TROTTING NOTES Reminder Entries (present yearlings) for the New Zealand Sapling Stakes (1942), New Zealand Champion Stakes (1942), and the New Zealand Futurity Stakes (1943) close at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s office on Thursday at 5 p.m. Rthandicapped Surprise Potts has been penalised 24 yards in the light-harness events on the Banks Peninsula Racing Club’s programme. He is now on 60 yards behind in the Wairewa Trot Handicap and 24 yards behind' in the Waihora Park Trot Handicap. New Derby Gelding G. Mouritz is handling a three-year-old gelding by New Derby from Bon Rej, who has attracted favourable attention in his work to this stage of his education. This gelding has the appearance of a good pacer, and he has the right manner of moving to suggest that he will develop early speed, although he is not being hurried. Burt Scott Formerly owned and raced by Mr M. C. McTigue, the four-year-old pacer Burt Scott has been purchased by the Addington trainer V. Alborn. This gelding has revealed useful form on several occasions, and he should prove a useful addition to Alborn’s team. At the moment he is being given a spell, and he will be put back in work at a later date. Promising Novice Courier, the three-year-old gelding by Rey de Oro from Belinda, is being spelled by J. Fraser, jun., at the moment, and he will be brought back to work in the near future. This novice has displayed considerable promise in his training to this stage, and he has left the impression that he will develop into a useful pacer with a little more age; Back to Trotting Gait When Royal Romance was recommissioned recently after a fairly long spell from the tracks it was her owner’s intention to put her to the pacing gait, at which she has shown considerable promise, but the tight limits provided for the trotters on the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s Easter' programme have resulted in this fine mare being put back in work as a trotter. She is on hard marks over all distances, but the tight limits at the local meeting will find her reasonably well placed in the handicaps. Popular Success Surprise Potts, a double winner among the pacers competing at the Westland Racing Club’s meeting, is a promising three-year-old by Jack Potts from Sonoma Bell. .This juvenile shaped well in the early classics for three-year-olds this season, but this was the first time he had proved capable of winning, A pleasing feature connected with his elevation from the maiden ranks is that he was handled on both occasions by C. King, one of the leading and most capable reinsmen of a few seasons ago, who has only recently re-entered the sport.

eral horses at the sale including a yearling Signalman—Miss Stent filly for 15 guineas. Some months afterwards this filly was resold in Invercargill, the purchaser being the late Mr F, A. Price, who paid 43 guineas for her. Named Miss Signal, the filly won several races, but it was at the stud where she was to earn higher fame. Her descendants have been winning good races ever since, among them The Smuggler, Signaller, Totolomai, Treback, Waitoru, and Doubleack in more recent times. Doubleack is a five-year-old brown gelding by Balboa out of Morse Signal (dam also of Totolomai, Trebleack, Waitoru, and Ackemma), who was by Vice-Admiral from Miss Signal. It is not a Stud Book family, but Miss Signal’s dam, Miss Stent, was given at the time of Mr Gollan’s dispersal sale as being by the Barbarian horse Randwick (a winner ,of the Hawke’s Bay Cup) out of Gipsy Girl, by Kingston. The late Mr Baird had that good sire Gipsy King at the stud, and he was very fond of the word Gipsy in naming his horses, though there appears to have been no actual relationship between Gipfey King and’ Gipsy Girl, the ancestress of Doubleack.
