EELS FOR MAORIS OVERSEAS

More than 2500 eels were caught in an eel drive organised by the Temuka Maoris at Lake Walnono at the weekend, The drive was arranged after a request by Maoris serving overseas for Maori foods. The eels were preserved at Arowhenua and will be shipped overseas, the Geraldine and Temukg Zone Patriotic Committee having promised their co-operation in this. The party comprised about 25 members, under the supervision of Messrs Mitai Tuture. Hoani Mamaru, and ifars Rehera Manning, who are elders of the tribe. The eels were reported to be abundant. Only 10 men speareo, while the others cleaned. On numerous it is stated, four eeis were speared simultaneously on toe same spear. Two men dragging a pum filled the boat with 236 eels in day* light spearing. At night the tallies wer between 800 and 900. Mr Wjremu Mihaka supervised both the taking o the fish and first phases of the P re serving onerations. ~ The South Canterbury AcclunaUsa tion Society held an eel drive on urday evening and collected 200, wm were given to the Arowhenua Maori* The fish were mostly cauAat in j, Tengawai river.
