THE GOVERNORGENERAL

Civic Welcome Given In Wellington (Press Association Telegram.) WELLINGTON, February 24. Rarely has Wellington accorded visitors as demonstrative and hearty a welcome as her leading citizens gave to the Governor-General, Air Marshal Sir Cyril Newall, and Lady Newell to-night. The Town Hall was crowded for the civic reception when the Mayor, Mr T. C. A. Hislop, presented their Excellencies with a formal illuminated address of greeting and voiced the pleasure felt in the city that so distinguished a man had been sent to New Zealand as His Majesty’s representative. The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser, also joined in the welcome. The scene was a brilliant one—leaders of the Church and State, and of the armed services, as well as men and women prominent in every walk of public life, were present. Full evening dress, with decorations, was worn and the scene was lively with brilliant frocks, uniforms, glittering orders, and medals and jewellery. The Gov-ernor-General was in ordinary evening clothes, with decorations, in contrast to his previous appearances in Royal Air Force uniform. Lady Newall carried a bouquet of beautiful pink carnations.

Greetings From R.S.A.

The following telegram was sent to the Governor-General (Marshal of the Royal Air Force Sir Cyril Newall) on his arrival in Auckland last week by the president of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association (Mr D. W. Russell):—

“On behalf of the executive and members of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association I extend to you and Lady Newall a warm welcome to New Zealand and our best wishes for a most successful term of office, and trust old comrades will have an early opportunity of welcoming you to Christchurch.” The following reply has been received by the executive of the association from Wing Commander Humphrey Bevan, Comptroller of his Excellency’s household:— “The Governor-General and Lady Newall warmly appreciate the kind message of welcome from the executive of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association. His Excellency will look forward to meeting the members of your association.”
