NEW ENGINEER-IN-CHIEF

SUCCESSOR TO MR JOHN WOOD MR W. L. NEWNHAM APPOINTED A* (PHESS ASSOCIATION TELEGSAM.) WELLINGTON, February 22. The announcement that Mr W. L Newnham, assistant engineer-in-chief' of the Public Works Department, is to become engineer-in-chief and Undersecretary of the department at the end of the present month, when Mr John Wood retires, was made by the Minister for Public Works (the Hon. H. T. Armstrong) to-day. Mr Newnham was born m Christchurch and educated at the Timaru Boys’ High School and the Canterbury' College School of Engineering. He joined the Public Service in 1906 and r became an assistant engineer in 1911. He was on military service during : 1916-17, and on his return to the de- ■ partment he became assistant engineer on the Gisborne-Napier railway during ■ 1917 and 1918. This was followed by i a year at Paeroa as engineer in charge ? of the Paeroa district, and then two years as assistant engineer in head office. He became assistant designing engineer, head office, in 1921, occupying that position until 1929, when he was promoted to designing engineer. : In June, 1936, he was promoted to inspecting engineer, in June, 1939, he was appointed second assistant engin-eer-in-chief, and in November last he became, as assistant engineer-in-chief, the deputy head of the department
