FENDALTON TRAM TRACK
DISCUSSION BY BOARD The purchase of 10 or 12 buses could be made with the expenditure involved in the reconstruction of the Fendalton tram line and also the line to Opawa, the chairman (Mr .H. E. Denton) said at Saturday’s meeting of the Christchurch Tramway. Board. Answering criticism, he said that the cost of lifting and repacking the Fendalton line was estimated at £IB,OOO, and if the work was done Fendalton residents would have to be content: with the tramway system for another 15 years. Mr J. Mathison said that if the election wa:i not so near so much criticism would not have been heard. It was a'pity that the critics were not a little more constructive. Mr •A. A. McLachlan. member for the Fendalton district,. said residents were sensible of the difficulties under which the, board was labouring' and also conscious of the fact that the line was the least payable ■ of the . system. He suggested’that a warning should be , issued, to school . children, not to vide bicycles on the tram track. , Mr G. Manning, said that if the .board’s advice in ’ 1937 had been Acceptable the residents of Fendalton would; have- had a one-man tram system and a good. line. “The Waimairi County Council, is only asking’ that the track be kept in reasonable repair,” Mr W. J. Walter said.
The chairman: We = are -working ■at it all the tlma.
