The Minister for Public Works and for Housing (the Hon. H. T. Armstrong) arrived in Christchurch yesterday. He will visit the Harewood and Wigram aerodromes this morning. Mr E, Parlane, a member of the Christchurch Tramway Board, was congratulated by the board on Saturday on his selection as the Labour Party’s candidate for the mayoralty of Christchurch, Archbishop O’Shea, Metropolitan of New Zealand, arrived in Christchurch on Saturday morning from Wellington to attend the celebrations marking the twenty-fifth anniversary of Bishop Brodie’s consecration as Roman Catholic Bishop of Christchurch. Dr. J. Hight, of Canterbury University College, returned to Christchurch from the North Island by the steamer express on Saturday morning, Messrs Clyde Carr, J. O’Brien, and J. W. Munro, members of Parliament, were among the passengers from Wellington on Saturday morning. Congratulations to Bishop Brodie on the celebration of his episcopal jubilee were expressed by the Christchurch Tramway Board on Saturday, on the motion of the Hon. J. K. Archer, M.L.C., and Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P. Tributes were paid to Bishop Brodie’s community work, and special' reference was made to the tact, sagacity, and courage he had played in his important part as one of the mediators in the dispute between the tramway employees and a former board, Lieutenan,-Colonel C. M. Gray, who has been appointed commanding officer of the Ordnance School of the Australian Southern Command, is a son of Mr W. L. Gray, engineer at the Christchurch Tramway Board’s power-house. The board on Saturday extended its congratulations to Mr Gray and his son, who 'was educate at the Christchurch Boys’ High School. Mr W. Craig, chairman of' the Addington School Jubilee Committee, was presented with the badge of life membership of the Old Pupils’ Association by the Rev. J. F. Feron at a jubilee service held at the school yesterday afternoon.
New Decrees in Italy—A decree bans ice cream and pastry in Italy. It also halves the ration of fats which are now 12 ounces a month. The Fascist Party has abolished amateur theatricals, declaring the war demands that Italians must be serious.—Rome, February 21. Eire’s Attitude Criticised—A crowded meeting of Irishmen and Women in London organised by Mr Robert Sanders, a former Deputy-Lieutenant of the County of Cork, pledged Itself to oppose Eire's neutrality and support the war aims of Britain. The meeting decided to form an association.—London, February 21.
