OLD BOYS LOSE LEAD BRILLIANT BATTING BY LANCASTER PARK Although everything was in favour of the batsmen, scoring was only fair on Saturday when the sixteenth round of matches in the Canterbury Cricket Association's competition was played. There were, however, some very close and exciting finishes in two games that maintained spectators’ interest to the end. The only century of the day was scored by I. B. Cromb for Lancaster Park against Riccarton. In 69 minutes he made 101, which included five sixes and 11 fours. There were several excellent bowling performances, but the biggest bag of the day was secured by J. D. Mackay (Wigram), who took six for 30 against Harewood. By drawing with Army, Old Boys lost the lead in the competition, which is now shared by East Christchurch and West Christchurch by two points from Old Boys, and Lancaster Park has displaced Sydenham in fourth place. The results of Saturday's matches are are follows: East Christchurch 204 for seven wickets (declared) beat Old Collegians 133 on the first Innings. West Christchurch 122 beat St. Albans 96 on the first Innings. Old Boys 199 for eight wickets (declared) drew with Army 190 for nine wickets. Lancaster Park 202 for two wickets beat Riccarton 149 on the first Innings. Weist Old Boys 220 for nine wickets (declared) drew with Sydenham 150 lor seven wickets. Harewood 176 beat Wlgram 165 on the first Innings. The opening stand by V. James (76) and M. Lohrey (46), which was worth 112 runs, was easily the best batting in East Christchurch’s innings against Old Collegians, whose bowling was steady rather than dangerous. There was little to enthuse over in Old Collegians’ batting, which, apart from that of J. C. Saunders (59), was poor. The best bowling figures were those of C. V. Walter (Old Collegians), three for 30, and R. Commons (East Christchurch), three for 37. R. H. Scott, back from the West Coast, and E. Mulcock, who took five for 46 and five for 50 respectively, made short work of West Christchurch, for whom K. F. :M. Uttley’s 51 was best. St. Albans, however, did even worse against A. C. Brown (five for 35), and J. Smith’s 23 was top score. Inconsistent, batting was seen In the Old Boys-Army game, in which W. McD. Anderson (Old Boys) 96, and M, P. Donnelly 75. dominated the '■ A. H. Monteath (Army) did next best with 30. The finish was very close and Army needed only 10 to win with the last man in. The best bowling figures were those of W. A. Hadlee (Old Boys), three for 17. Against the bowling of W. O. Mappleback (four for 48) and Cromb (three for' 48) Riccarton had to struggle for runs, and Its most successful batsmen were G. H. Stringer 38 and P. Rose 31. The Riccarton bowling, too, was treated harshly. Cromb and D. A. Stout putting on 127 for the first wicket in 50 minutes. Stout's 75 included two sixes and 11 fours, while Cromb completed his 100 In 65 minutes. A solid stand by R. McKenzie (72) and C. C. Gillies (35) was the highlight of West Old Boys’ Innings against Sydenham, lor whom C. J. Oliver (three for 44) and S. Cameron (three for 60) divided the wickets. ' Sydenham started badly, but A. J. Sutherland (36) and A. Burgess (30) improved the position. D. Moynihan, who took three for 24. was the pick of the West Old Boys bowlers. What at one time seemed an easy win for Harewood against Wlgram produced a most exciting finish. Harewood batted first and R. J. Emery (33), B. Donaldson (33) and G. K. Young (32) did best against the bowling of Mackay and R. F. Cook (four for 92). Wlgram loss five for 13 and when nine were down for 89 the game seemed over. However, L. J. Johns held his. end up and S. G. Lester attacked the bowling. ' In 25 minutes he made 88, including 12. fours and three sixes, and he was- bowled with the total only.-11 short of Harewood's. Emery, five for 68, and DOnaldson. five for 80, bowled excellently for Harewood, tor whom it was their last game. Competition Table The following table ;ahows the positions of the teams:— • Wins. MATCH AGAINST WELLINGTON

STRONG CANTERBURY TEAM PICKED The following team has been picked by the sole selector (Mr M. L. Page) to represent Canterbury against Wellington at Wellington, on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday next:—W. A. Hadlee (Old Boys) captain; W. McD. Anderson (Old Boys), B. Harbldge (Old Boys), wicketkeeper; A. Burgess (•Sydenham). S. Cameron (Sydenham), I. B. Cromb (Lancaster Park). W. O. Mapplebeck (Lancaster Park), R. Westwood (Lancaster Park), D. Moynihan (West Old Boys), F. P. O’Brien (St. Albans), and V. James (East Christchurch). Mr W. M. Strachan will be manager and act as twelfth man. The team is a strong one, and differs In only one respect from that which defeated Otago recently in that Westwood replaces A. W. Roberts, but has three changes from the side that was beaten by Wellington at the New Year. Hadlee, who was not available for that game, is again included, and with Harbldge and Cameron, fill the places of D. A. R. Moloney, K. F. M. Uttley, and Roberts. In spite of these changes there is every reason to hope that Canterbury will be able to avenge its previous defeat, especially since Wellington will not have the services of M. P. Donnelly, who is again playing for Army here.
