RACING AND TROTTING

TURF GOSSIP

TROTTING NOTES

NEW BRIGHTON T.C.

TROTTING AT ADDINGTON

LAWN TENNIS

Reminder Nominations for the Westland Racing Club’s meeting will close on Monday. Riccarton Most of the horses which were racing at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting on Saturday have been enjoying an easy time for a few days. They are gradually getting back to Work and thf r< L sh . ould „ b . e renewed interest in the track at Riccarton next week in preparation for the Dunedin Cup m’eetmg. which will attract about 30 candidates from Riccarton. For Gore M. Conza has left for Gore, where he will race Skyrena, Philibun, and Silver Night on Saturday and Monday. After Gore they will go to Winton next week and then to the Dunedin meeting. \ Several Riccarton jockeys will be riding at the Gore meeting. C. T. Wilson will be on Skyrena and Peony Rose; J. W. Jennings on Philibun, Silver Night, Doubleack, and Aravane; L. J. Ellis on Valcron and Craiglea; and A. E. Ellis on Combat. Stonyhurst Stock Two fresh horses, both two years old, have arrived at Riccarton from Stonyhurst Stud and have joined the team of H. and A. Cutts, to be broken in and prepared for racing. Court Dress, a bay colt, is a brother to Night Dress, by Nightmarch from Ball Dress, while Donnybrook Fair, a brown gelding, is by Foxbridge, from Babel, by The Ace from Scrimmage. Change of Stables The three-year-old filly, Nightglass, by Nightmarch from Good Sight, has been sold by the trustees of the late Sir Charles Clifford. Her new owner is Mr W. Maloney, a Christchurch resident, not previously identified with the galloping sport, and he has placed the filly in L. C. Gough’s stable at Riccarton. Nightglass has not done much racing, but she dead-heated with Symbol for first place in a race at Rangiora in October, while nearly a year ago she won a maiden event at Motukarara. More success should come her way this season. Broken In F. D. Jones has just broken in a two-year-old gelding that Mr C. Holdsworth has leased from Mr E. Gates. He is by Myosotis from Lady Ripon, a sister to Studley Royal, by Paper Money from Red Queen. Welcome Rain^ Heavy rain, which set in early this week, will have a beneficial effect on the course and the grass tracks at Wingatui. Missing

Sovereign Lady, Muffler, and Rue are three notable omissions from the Riccarton horses nominated for the Dunedin meeting this month. The absence of Mr George Murray Aynsley will leave a real gap, as he has been one of the oldest and most successful patrons of Wingatui. He has a great record in the Dunedin Cup. having trained six winners of the race—Stepdancer (1906 and 1907), Prim (1909). Warstep (1915); Footfall (1927), and Silver Scorn (1933). Grey Colt Beau’Pere had a good winner at Randwick recently, when Beau Port won the Widden Handicap, for two-year-olds. He is a grey and -he cpst 2200 guineas when sold last Easter as a yearling. His dam is by Portlaw, by Beresford from Portree, by Stefan the Great, a grey son of the Tetrach. In Hospital It is reported from Wellington that S J. Reid was operated on in a private hospital there this week. The operation was of a most delicate character and his progress, in the circumstances, is satisfactory. ~ Judge’s Assistant Mr lan Beaks has been appointed by the Australian Jockey Club to be clerk of the scales and judge’s assistant at Randwick, in place of Mr T. Nicholson. who has become assistant secretary of the club. Mr Peaks also acts as judge’s assistant at other meetings in the Sydney metropolitan area. For Melbourne -Mr C H. Slater, of Hastings, has sold the Siegfried—'Vigilance yearling colt a brother to Lady Furst to Mr John Wren, of Melbourne. The colt was passed in at the yearling sales at 450 guineas, and has now been sold at a substantial figure Mr Wren was the buyer of the Bulandshar—Tea Tattle colt which topped last year’s sale at 2000 guineas, and he has raced another New Zealander, Wilson, wit. some success in Australia, He has a yearling brother to Wilson being reared at the Flaxmere Stud, Hastings. Riding Out Rule Melbourne stewards take a serious view of jockeys not riding their mounts out in races, and are imposing severe penalties for the offence. At Moonec Valley on January 4, J. Maher was suspended for two months for not having ridden Ronalla out in the Banyule Trial Hurdle, and at Flemington A. Breasley. rider of Royal March, was fined £lO for not having ridden his mount out at the finish of the second division of the Novice Stakes. Royal March was beaten by Colonel for third place.

Medium Class Trotters Frances Worthy is conceding time to be in the Progressive Handicap at Addington to-morrow, but at her best she is a steady trotter, and for this reason alone is entitled to some consideration. Renegade, in the same race, has not performed for some time, ana he may be in need of a race, while Thor has never impressed as anything above the average. Native Ruler has speed and has shown solidity in several of his races. Driven by G. Cameron, he will have many friends in the opening event on the programme. In Saddle Smile Again would only have to register her best time at Addington to win the Telegraph Handicap easily for, handicapped on 2min 12sec for a mile, she has a record of 2min 5 2-ssec for the distance. It is asking a lot of her, however, ' and several better placed in the handicaps may pace a good mile. Mankind, King’s Jubilee, Gay Avon, and Loyal Pat will all have their followers in the betting. Improvers A good field of improving pacers should provide a first-class contest in the Pioneer Handicap, and backers will be presented with a problem. Jerry Parrish, Sir Julien, Kid Wolf, Black Art, Little Derby, Happy Man, and Wainoni Girl are all likely to improve on previous performances, and the public will have a task to find the actual favourite. A Useful Pair

Huguenot and Three Tens have been racing prominently of late, although neither has been on the winning list, and both will be in the running throughout the Advace Handicap. A good stayer in Royal Surprise may add a lot of interest to the race. From Auckland Pirate’s Last, who has done most of his racing in Auckland, will make his first appearance on a Canterbury course in the Strowan Handicap, and his form will be watched with interest. Native Huon, a solid trotter on her day, Parrish Guide, brilliant at his best but disappointing in recent events, and Shadeland are possibilities in a field of trotters. Bronze Eagle Bronze Eagle, who at times has performed like a champion in the making, but whose wins have been few and far between, will have his chance in the Harewood Handicap against some useful pacers. He is a good stayer, and over a mile and five furlongs he will be afforded every opportunity. Grattanita, Jacose, and Oxford Scholars are all pacers likely to improve. Crack Sprinters While several horses engaged in the Au Revoir Handicap claim engagements earlier in the day, the race will not lose interest because of this. If all the acceptors go to the post the race should be the most interesting of the day, for each horse has proved its ability over a mile and a quarter. Great Divide, Mankind, Rowi, Harold Guy, Fremont, Peter Smith, and others go to make up a field of good class sprinters.

TO-MORROW’S PROGRAMME The Canterbury Park Trotting Club will hold another of its popular fixtures at Addington to-morrow, and well-balanced fields in which good quality horses are included should provide first-class racing. With the weather favourable the track should be in first-class order, and it would not be surprising to find more than one record broken.

Under the win and place system of betting the following horses should race prominently:—

Progressive Handicap: Syntax, Native Ruler, Hamel Bey. Telegraph Handicap: Smile Again, Mankind, King’s Jubilee. Pioneer Handicap: Sir Julien, Silver Laddie, Jerry Parrish. Paparua Handicap: Zincali, Great Divide, Navy Blue.

Advance Handicap: Huguenot, Three Tens, Royal Surprise. Strowan Handicap: Native Huon, Parrish Guide, Grade Fields. Harewood Handicap: Bronze Eagle, Oxford Scholar, Captain Potts. Au Revoir Handicap: Rowi, Peter Smith, Nelson Eddy.

Last year the sales extended over five davs, and realised 111,500 guineas.

RANKING LIST GAMES FAILURE OF A SYSTEM [By CROSSCOURT.I Once again more matches were left unplayed than were played when the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association’s ranking list series was continued—or was supposed to be continued —at Wilding Park last evening. Only five of the senior men's games were played and none of the five women’s matches, but both the scheduled junior men’s games were decided. It was one more example of the thoroughly unsatisfactory system on which the ranking list has been conducted this season. The association, in face of the almost unanimous wishes of the players, insisted that the games .should be played in the evenings instead of on Saturday afternoons. The result has been a long list of defaulted or postponed matches and several withdrawals from the lists. It has led to complications which have caused the ranking committee to override the ranking list rules and to do many players serious injustice. The rules say that a player who wins a match shall have the right to challenge the player immediately above him. On many occasions players have been denied this right. One man has played four or five matches, won every one of them, and has only once challenged a player higher than himself. Another highly-ranked player has held his position throughout the season without once defending his place. Most important of the games played last evening was that for third place between R. G. Pattinson and A. R. Cant. Pattinson played with great steadiness and accuracy in a very even game, and one service break alone made the difference in each set. Results were as follows: — Men’s List R. G. Pattinson beat A. R. Cant (challenger) for third place, 6-3, 6-4. S. Watson beat H. Lenk (challenger) for eleventh place, 6-0, 6-1. E. L. Prebble beat D. H. Cummack (challenger) for thirteenth place, 6-4, 6-2. K. G. Heley (challenger) beat V. W. Hammond for seventeenth place, 7-5, 6-3. R. A. Kear beat J. R. Barton (challenger) for nineteenth place, 8-6, 7-5. Junior List R. J. Telford beat G, Wallace (challenger) for first place, 6-2, 6-3. W. P. Bennett beat H. Parsons (challenger) for third place, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.
