MEDICAL STUDENTS AND WAR SERVICE
POSITION OF THOSE GRANTED PASSES i ____ [THE PRESS Special Service.] AUCKLAND, January 20. The position of medical students who were granted passes last year under the war concessions statute in the selection of entrants for the first professional year at the Medical School was discussed by the University Senate. In proposing a motion asking for an assurance that these students would not be prejudiced in any way by their service, Dr. H. G. Denham said he understood that such students would be considered for entrance only after all others. “On behalf of the University of Otago,” said Mr W. J. Morrell, “I am prepared to say that those claims will be carefully considered.” Those who had passed the intermediate examinations, he said, and a small number of graduate entrants and satisfactory students from the previous year would have preference. With‘regard to the others, however, his opinion was that those who had passed under the war concessions would have consideration along with those passing tha special examinations in February. A committee had been set up and desired to discuss the matter on as full information as possible, to ensure fair treatment.
A modification of Dr. Denham’s request was passed, asking that the University of Otago should obtain reports of the students who had passes granted because of military service before deciding the list of those who were to be admitted to the Medical School.
