Twenty Grand also showed better form and looked likely a furlong from home, but weakened badly in the run to the post. Gay Thread lost a lot of ground at the start of this race, and after holding the rear position for more than half the journey made, a fast run to be handy to the leading bunch turning for home, but that was the end of his effort.

'Progeny’of Nightmarch Omapo created a big impression by his success on Saturday. He has always shown promise but has not raced to any extent, through suffering from minor mishaps. Omapo is a brother to Haerepo, both being bred by' P. V. Mjison, who has an attractive two-year-old sister to the pair in work. At a Disadvantage

Trench Fight made a good showing in the January Handicap on Saturday in spite of the soreness which prevented his racing on the first day. He entered the straight wide out, and just as he looked dangerous/he faltered and lost some ground. He came again nearing the end for fourth place, but it was evident that he was not himself, and he returned saving his heavilybandaged leg. Disappointing Winning Rival gave one of the poorest displays in her career on Saturday. She was not only always one of the rear division, but failed to strike out at any stage. Evidently the firm ground was against her. Unsuitable Going

Both Grey Night and Sham Boy were well placed entering the course proper in the Camp Handicap, but they were done with early in the run home. Neither is likely to improve for the third day unless the track becomes soft.

Final Day at Trentham Acceptances received for the concluding day’s races £t Trentham on Wednesday should provide another excellent programme and investors will be faced with some difficult problems. The majority of winners of the previous two days will be again produced and a little fresh blood 1 will add interest. Riccarton stables will once more be in strong evidence, but there will be a few absentees, including Omapo, Doria, Palfrey, Monetary, Settlement, Salutation, Gold Nugget, and Lord Midas.

Apprentices Suspended Two inquiries opened at Trentham on Thursday were concluded on Saturday. Because of interference to Density, Doria and Marshal Hall in the Telegraph Handicap, R. S. Howell, rider of Rakahanga, was suspended for two months for careless riding. A. Midwood, rider of White Rajah in the Anniversary Handicap, was suspended for one month for causing interference to Gayest Son. The explanation of R. McTavish, rider of Red Cat, in the same race, was accepted. Howell and Midwood are both successful apprentices. The former is with J. H. Jefferd and Midwood is with B. Burgess. Lacking Stamina

Density turned on her usual burst of speed for the greater part of six furlongs in the Metropolitan Handicap on Saturday and was going so freely in front a furlong from home that success seemed assured. She suddenly began to weaken and beat a hasty retreat. The two races she has had may sharpen her up as all her final work was confined to short sprints, and she may carry on better on Wednesday.

Likely Favourite Hearth’s withdrawal from her two engagements on Saturday caused much surprise, as there appeared to be an army' of bettors waiting to support her. Evidently there was nothing amiss with her as she figures in two races again on Wednesday. Ban Himself - Out

King’s Toast was again very slow to find his feet in the Douro Handicap, but as usual he pulled hard over the first few furlongs and his rider wisely allowed him to have his head and he was In front at the half-mile. As he was beaten only in the last few strides, the ground he lost at the start no doubt caused his defeat, and with better treatment on Wednesday he should make amends. Not Forthcoming

When Wardress commenced her final run .on Saturday, Royal Chief was not tax. km her, feut .wfcejeis

went on to win the latter was only able to finish in third place a little over two lengths from her. Royal Chief certainly did well under his big weight. He conceded Wardress 301b, but there was again an absence of that final burst which has characterised many of his previous efforts. Distance Will Suit

Not Out put up a bold showing on Saturday, but, pulling hard in front, he was in trouble a long way from home. He would, however, benefit from the race, and his prospects over a mile on Wednesday will be Highly regarded by investors. Yearling Sales

, The fifteenth annual national sale of thoroughbred yearlings will be opened at Trentham to-day and Concluded to-morrow. To-day, 130 lotsare to be offered, these including youngsters by Broiefort, St. Boswells, Guarantee, Gynerium, Spiral, Mr Standfast, Dink, and Lang Bian, who are all being represented at the sales for the first time. Broiefort is by Blandford and is at the Grange Stud, Wanganui, St. Boswells is by Solario and is at Te Mahanga, Guarantee by Paper Money is now in Australia, Gynerium, whose stock at the sales has attracted much attention, is' by Phalaris and is owned by Mr A. Symes of Hastings. Spiral is one of the few Limond horses in Australia or New Zealand, and is still at Koatanui. Mr Standfast is by Buchan from China, dam of Beau Pere and Gay Shield and is now in Australia. Dink, by Nothing Venture, is also a half-brother to Beau Pere and Gay Shield, and is quartered at Otahuhu. Lang Bian, who was bred in France, is by Massine, a leading French sire, and he is at the Karamu Stud, Hastings, There was a parade of the yearlings -at Trentham on Friday afternoon, and again yesterday, both attracting large crowds. Although there are no outstanding youngsters catalogued such as when the Limond stock was in the boom, especially in Australia, and later when Beau Pere’s progeny attracted attention, there are many well bred lots, and there is a marked improvement m the get up of the yearlings, more especially by the small scale breeders of which there is now a considerable number. A few Australian buyers will be on the scene, and others will be represented at the ringside by local commissioners. A notable absentee will be G. Price, but' it is understood at least one lot will be purchased on his behalf. Another For Riccarton

The three-year-old colt Chary, by Inflation, owned by Mr M; C. GoUld, of Palmerston North, will . be ; taken over at Trentham this week by C. Emerson, who is to train: him in future for his owner. Chary won three races as a two-year-old, including the Champagne Stakes at, Riccarton, but later suffered an injury and he had only two races this season before contesting the two open sprints at Trentham last week.
