WEST COAST NEWS

HEAVY RAIN AT GREYMOUTH

ALL SPORTS FIXTURES POSTPONED

After a long period of comparatively fine weather, extending over the last six weeks, Greymouth had : a stormy week-end, with almost incessant heavy downpours of rain overnight and throughout yesterday. The total fall for the 24 hours ending at 9 o’clock yesterday morning was 2.30 inches. All low-lying areas were considerably flooded, and on occasions the water-tables were unable to cope with the floodwater. Portions of William street and Leonard street were covered with, sheets of water throughout the day. Apparently the fall was not so heavy up country, as there was no great volume of water in the Grey river, which was running at only about a three-knot current. All sporting fixtures, including tennis and cricket matches, were postponed yesterday. The rough weather was continuing last evening with a strong north-westerly wind and muggy atmospheric conditions. ' No damage or blockage of traffic routes is reported from the country districts. AMATEUR SPORTS MAHAR CUP COMPETITION TO BE HELD A decision to hold the annual'Mahar Cup meeting on February 1 at Westport was made by the committee of the Westport Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club on Thursday evening. Advice was received that the Marlborough and Motueka Clubs would be unable to send teams for the competition. but Nelson and West Coast would be represented. The continued absence of Motueka representatives from Mahar Cup meetings held at Westport since the competition was inaugurated was the subject of adverse comment. It was considered unfair that Westport . teams should have had to visit Motueka twice for no return visits. Regret was expressed that the Marlborough club w u uld not be represented for the first time in the history of the competition because of the effect-.of the war on its membership. Messrs J. S. Connelly and S. and D. Johnson were appointed to select the Westport team.
