• LITTLE RIVER v The monthly meeting of the Little River Women’s Institute was held in the Town Hall on Friday. Miss Ngaire White presided over a good attendance. Miss Maffey (Southampton) gave a talk on her voyage from Liverpool to Auckland under war conditions. Competitions resulted: —Vase carnations, Mesdames Shadbolt 1, B. Tait 2, C. Londrigan 3; plate of oven scones, Mrs A. Mould I, Mrs Keller 2, Mrs A. Patten 3; hemstitched article, Mrs E. White 1, Mrs Shadbolt 2. , Hostesses were Mesdames L. Lewthwaite, W. Mould; M. Wilkins, and W. Bulman. , ',.

BURNHAM The January meeting of the Burnham Women’s Institute was held in the public school. Mrs A. P. Chamberlain presided over 'a good attendance. A demonstration on bottling fruit was given by Mrs I. Watson, of Rolleston. Mrs Merchant gave.a report on the activities of the war efforts committee, Which raised f large sum of money recently at a garden party. Members had been busy knitting mittens for soldiers and wool was distributed.

Competitions were as follows: Large blooms, Miss J. Chamberlain 1, Mrs R. Bell 2; small blooms, Miss J. Chamberlain 1, Mrs Marchant 2. Mrs R.

and Miss J. Bell equal 3; bowl of flowers, Mrs Merchant 1. The wandering shilling w z won by Mrs Barwick. Hostesses were Mesdames Hall, V. Tweed, Merchant, and Miss D. Bell.
