MEET MR SINDLER

Among the unsung heroes of films is Irving Sindler, says a Hollywood correspondent. Mr Sindler is a property man and in films property men receive no recognition. You may, nevertheless, have seen his name. Mr Sindler proudly boasts that he has sneaked it into every film on which he has worked in the last 15 years. In “Wuthering Heights” there was a gravestone bearing the inscription: “I. Sindler. A Good Man.” And in “Raffles” a newspaper insert noted-that “Lord Sindler had returned from a hunting expedition.” Sindler’s name decorated the front of a delicatessen store in "Dead End,” and it appeared in Chinese across a' banner in “Marco Polo”—or so we’ve been told. And preview scouts report seeing a sign labelled "Ma Sindler, Home Cooking.” over a- small cafe in “The Westerner,” which stars Gary Cooper. NEW “BACK STREET” Joan Fontaine will star in the remake of “Back Street,” playing the role that Irene Dunne did so well in a few years ago. • The story property belongs to Universal, which is now busy trying to find someone to take the part John Boles played in the original. The new “Back Street” will be directed by the English Robert Stevenson. The Stevensons seem to be settling down at Universal City. Anna Lee, Mrs Stevenson in private life, is in the new Marlene Dcitrich picture,. "Seven Sinners." which is being made at that studio. Incidentally, Brian Aherne, Joan Fontaine’s husband, is also on the Universal lot. He is making “Hired Wife.’’ Burgess Meredith and Charles Butterworth have been signed for roles in Paramount's "Second Chorus.” in which Fred Astaire, Paulette Goddard, and Artie Shaw have the leading roles.
