KAIKOURA QUEEN CARNIVAL

FIRST FUNCTION HELD Kaikoura's first effort for the Queen Carnival Fund was made by a number of prominent townspeople, who organised a cards party on Friday, Mr and Mrs F. J. Monk lent their home for the occasion. Bridge and snooker occupied most of the evening, and it was decided by ballot which queen should benefit from the fees collected, the sports queen winning. Efforts will continue until the district’s quota for the £1,000,000 appeal is reached. RANGIORA PERSONAL NOTES

Mr E. S. Smith, of the Department of Agriculture. Christchurch, has been appointed Instructor of Agriculture at Rangiora. in place of Mr A. S. Nash, who will leave for Balclutha early next month to manage a linen flax mill. . Mr J. Mitchell, who retired recently as superintendent of the John Knox Presbyterian Sunday School, Rangiora, was presented with a fountain pen on Sunday morning at the annual prize-giving ceremony of the school.’ The Rev. J. M. Bates, who made the presentation for the children. referred to Mr Mitchell’s long service at the church. RANGIORA DEFENCE RIFLE CLUB

The fourth competition shoot of the Rangiora Defence Rifle Club was held on Saturday. Results were:— C. Humphreys, 300 yards 43, 300 yards 44. handicap 6. total 93; A. Amor. 41. 44, 7—92; R. DANCE AND EUCHRE PARTY AT HALS WELL

An enjoyable and well-attended dance and euchre party were held in the Halswell Hall recently. The proceeds were given to the Halswell Soldiers’ Welfare Committee’s funds. Music was supplied by Frank Miller’s Band and Mr Dew was master of ceremonies. A lucky spot dance was won by Mr C Nicholl and partner and Miss Wrighton and Mr Williams won the Monte Carlo. Euchre prizes were won by Mrs A. Hann, Mrs W. Boon, Mr W. James, sen., and Mr F. Methven.
