THE WOMEN'S INSTITUTES
BRYNDWR Mrs H. S. J. Goodman convened a meeting which was held at her home in Bryndwr road to form a Bryndwr Women’s Institute. Mrs W. Waugh and Mrs M. Morten were present as voluntary organisers. Officers elected were:—President, Mrs H. S. J. Goodman; vice-president. Mrs W. Lambic; secretary, Mrs A. C. Harris; treasurer, Miss S. Lambie; commitee, Mesdames Rowney. Pearson, Hounscll, and Bradshaw. It was decided that the war-time aims of the branch should be directed mainly to the making of clothing for destitute children in England. Musical items were given by Miss Lambie and Mrs Hounsell. It was announced that the next meeting would be held early in February at Mrs Goodman’s home. MOUNT PLEASANT The monthly meeting of the Mount Pleasant Women’s Institute was held at the home of the Misses Smythe, with' Mrs H. Edgar presiding. A talk on "Herbs Through the Ages” was given by Miss M. Jennings, who showed a collection of herbs from her garden. Hostesses assisting with afternoon tea were Mesdames F. A. Roche, W. F. Roche. MacDonnell, and W. de C. Hughes. KAIAPOI. The president, Mrs A. E. Brown, presided over a good attendance of members at the final meeting of the year of the Kaiapoi Women’s Institute m the Orange Hall, The meeting took the form of a Christmas party for members and their children. Gifts were exchanged. Christmas carols were sung by the Institute Glee Club, and songs were given by Miss Allison Wylie and Mrs Ryan (Tuahiwi). A play was given by the school children. produced by Mrs M. Greenwood, those taking part being E. Aspinall, J. Broadley, D, Hunter, F. Harper, B. Gibson, B. Hirst, and R. Thompson. The children also took part in dancing and a community sing, music being played by Mrs S.J. Richards, Soft drinks were given by Mrs E. Fitzgerald, ice-cream by Mrs A. E. Brown and Mrs K. Muhroe, and a Christmas cake by Mrs W. Gardner. Competitions resulted:—Best bloom (large). Mrs W. C. Tourell 1, Mrs A; E. Brown and Mrs L. P. Hopkins (equal) 2; best bloom (small), Mrs A. E. Brown 1, Mrs E. J. Corcoran 2, Mrs Partridge 3; bowl of Christmas lilies, Mrs L. P. Hopkins 1; mincemeat. Mr% J. Murray; Christmas cake, Mrs W. C Tourell 1. Mrs J. Murray 2. AKAROA Mrs W. A. Newton presided over a Eood attendance of members at the iccember meeting of ,the Akaroa Women’s Institute. A letter was read from Mr P. J. Twomey thanking members for a parcel of gifts for lepers at Makogai. Mrs George Hewitt (Pigeon Bay) advised the Institute that one of her relatives on active service had received a parcel from the Akaroa Institute and wished to convey his thanks. It was decided to include the soldier’s name in the parcel list. As a result of a discussion on the institute's help for war efforts, members expressed willingness to give more help to future appeals. It was decided to have a silent prayer for all women in distress throughout the world. , ~ Miss Norah Curry continued the golden thread talk with an account f the life of Dame Laura Knight. Songs were sung by Mrs C. D. Sealey, and Mrs P. R. J. Peoples and Miss Elsie Keegan played a pianoforte duet. Results of competitions were:~Best bloom: Miss M. Jacobson 1. Mrs A. W. Aitchison 2, Mrs D. J. Narbcy 3. Christmas gift: Mrs F. C. Newton. Parcel competition; Mrs A. W. Aitchison. The hostesses were Mesdames H. J. Moore, Pilkington, Misses B. and M. Jacobson. OMIHI The December meeting of the Omihi Women's Institute was held recently with the president, Mrs J. Harris, presiding. The roll call, ‘‘What I would like.my-husband or boy-friend to give :me for a Christmas present,” caused much amusement. A donation of £2 will be forwarded from the Institute for the Patriotic Fund. An apron parade of coloured prints was held, the winners being Miss J. Hamilton with Miss £. Sloss second.
Competition results were:—Decorated table, Miss J, Threlkeld 1, Miss E. Sloss 2; best large bloom, Miss A. Symonds 1, Miss J. Foster 2; best small bloom, Miss D. Slcss 1, Miss J. Foster 2; green Christmas gift. Miss M. Francis 1, Mrs D. Little 2; best collection of vegetables, Miss A. Symonds. The green group acted as hostesses. ROTHERHAM Mrs Britton presided at the monthly meeting of the Rotherham Women’s Institute, and Mrs Pritton gave a talk on the life of John Milton. Hostesses at the tea hour were Mesdames Walsh and Johnston. ' Results of competitions were: large bloom, Mrs G. Popplewell 1, Mrs Britton 2; small bloom, Miss J. Popplewell 1, Mrs J. Thompson 2; Christmas gift costing not more than Is, Miss J. Popplewell 1, Mrs Britton 2; largest lettuce, Miss J, Popplewell 1, Mrs B. Henderson 2, Mrs C. Popplewell 3. SPRINGSTON SOUTH The December meeting of the Springston Women’s Institute was held at the home of Mrs H. Hamilton, Springston South. Afternoon tea was served on the lav/ns. The president (Mrs G. H. Hosken) presided. Competition results were:—Large bloom: Mesdames P. V. Bailey 1, G. Smithers 2, A. Powell 3. Small bloom: Mesdames W. Mounce 1, A. Powell 2, W. Leslie 3. Bowl of roses: Mesdames A. Powell 1, C. N. Powell 2. W. Leslie 3. Craft: Mesdames G. H. Hosken 1, J. Blakemore 2, A. Powell 3. Cold sweet: Mesdames A. Powell 1, C. N, Powell 2, W. Leslie 3. Wool, Mrs A. T. Hamilton; lucky spot, Mrs M. F. Ryan; treasure hunt, Mrs J. Blakemore; lucky number, Miss I. Powell; tea cosy, Mrs N. Powell; wandering shilling,' Mrs T. Greaves. Hostesses were Mesdames B. Moody, W. Hopkins, C. N. Powell. G, Smithers, W, Mounce, Misses N. Ryan and I. Powell. GLENTUNNEL Mrs G. D. Marsh presided over the monthly meeting of the Glentuhnel Women's Institute. Mrs Ross Mac Donald. voluntary organiser, spoke on the work of the institutes. Mrs R. Thomas was the winper of the wandering shil. ling, and Mrs Marshall conducted the competition. There was a good attendance at the December meeting of the Kimbell Women's Institute. Mrs Fraser, who presided proposed a motion of condolence with Mrs Green in the death of her brother. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect. Because of petrol restrictions it was decided to abandon the institute picnic and to give 10s to the school sports. One new member was enrolled. “Prevention is better than cure" was the subject of a further talk on health and hygiene by Mrs Sutton. Mrs Coulter accompanied the singers during the social hour. The following contributed items:—Mrs Fraser and Miss Fraser, Mrs Carol, Mrs Coulter, Miss Keefe and party, and the junior girls' choir. The competitions resulted;—Child'is school lunch, Mrs Allan 1; lettuce. Mrs Allan 1, Mrs Ross 2; bloom, Miss Smith 1, Miss M. Fraser 2.
A successful concert and dance, under the auspices of the Ruapuna-Carew Patriotic Committee, was held in the Ruapuna Hall on Thursday evening last. Mrs Chapman’s concert party provided an entertaining programme The sum of £26 was raised.
