KNIGHT COMMANDER WINS
SUCCESSES OF SCARTEEN AND
SYNTHETIC
Tlie Hororata Racing Club was favoured with ideal weather for its annual race meeting on the Hororata racecourse on Saturday, and although the attendance was no doubt affected by the prevailing restrictions, it was well up to previous figures. In spite of a four-horse held to open the programme, and the delay in , paying out on the seventh race because of an inquiry, speculation was satisfactory, the sum of £8221 10s being handled as against £.0241 10s at last year’s meeting, and £001(1 10s in 10,'IR. ' The track was .firm, and the racing was full of interest. some of the finishes being exceptionally close. The principal event, the H. A, Knight Memorial Handicap, was von by Knight Commander, whose victory, although somewhat unexpected by the public, was nevertheless popular as he was bred in the district, and his owner, Mr E. Gates, has been a practical s;upporter of the club for many years. Another well-received success was that of Scarteen in the Hororata Hack Handicap. This brother to Vintage had recently shown signs of throat trouble, but by the manner in which he completed his task over 10 furlongs, there can be little amiss with him. The programme was well organised by the secretary, Mr P. J. Byrne, who filled the office for the first time since he was appointed after the death of his father, Mr Byrne, the club’s secretary for several years. • Details:— BANGOR HIGH-WEIGHT HACK HANDICAP, Of £95; second horse £lO, and third horse £5 from stake. NOTES ON THE RACING First Success There were onlv four starters in the Bangor High-weight Hack Handicap. Ageratum wont away with the lead, but war soon joined by Dranoel. and the pair raced abreast to the home turn, where Agcratum faded out and Princess Minerva drew (alongside Dranoel. Dranoel ran out wide 'and took Princess Minerva with him, and when straightened up they settled down to a hard struggle. Princess Minerva gaining a neck verdict. Elmarch was a fair third, six lengths in front of Ageratmn. This was Princess Minerva’s first success, and it was long overdue. Dranoel would probably have won but for going out turning for home, and his rider had trouble in straightening him up, Princess Minerva in the meantime getting a clear run. Elmarch ran a reasonably good race, but Ageratum completed his task very unsatisfactorily. There was probably some excuse for this as lie suffered an injury whilst being unloaded from a float.
Circular Note Succeeds Master Flash and Circular Note accounted for most of the pool in the Trial Plate. Erainbie was the early leader, and with Master Flash as a companion had a useful lead entering the straight from Circular Note and Monopoly. Erainbie had Master Flash beaten early in the run home, but was then tackled by Circular Note, who drew right away to win in an effortless manner. Master Flash was a fair third, four lengths in front of Gold Nugget and Citizen together. This was Circular Note's first win, and his effort, after losing ground at the start, was impressive. He was recently transferred from Washdyke to R. Register's stable, and should be useful over the holidays. Erambie created a good impression in her first appearance in public. She was leased a few weeks hack by Mr C. Hnldsworth. who will have her racing next at Oamaru. Master Flash ran a fair race but failed to stay on. Glendore Trot Anrie’s Star, favourite for the Glendore Trot, went to the front *sfter a furlong had been covered, and led for the remainder of the journey. Diamond Cluster, Native Man, and Ordnance followed her through the back stretch, and three furlongs from home Glenlee ran up alongside Aurie’s Star, but the latter soon drew away again and carried on for a decisive win from Glenlee, with Native Man a fair third four lengths in front of Boreas. Turret, Ordnance, and Diamond Cluster followed. Malapert and Crackajack broke up at the start.
Scarteen’s Success Tlie Hororata Hack Handicap produced an interesting contest. Gay Parade set a fairly solid pace from the early stages and led for the first six furlongs.from Ferriby Scarteen, Gay Thread, and Iceland Spar. There was not much between Gay I Parade, Ferriby, and Scarteen entering the straight, with Gay Thread and Iceland Spar closing up. Gay Parade and Ferriby were the first to weaken, and Scarteen, taking charge in the final furlong, went on to have an easy win from Iceland Spar, who squeezed through nearing the post to get up to beat Gay Thread. Gay Parade was a head away, a neck in front of Ferriby Tills was Scartcen’s third success since he began racing and his first attempt ovei a middle distance. Iceland Spar found trouble in rounding the corners and actually did not settle down until the run home was tackled. Gay Thread showed further improvement. Gay Parade displayed liis usual early speed, but the distance once more troubled him.
An Overdue Win Symbol was sent out a staunch favourite for the H. A. Knight Memorial Handicap, but after disputing the lead with Epic from the early stages she faded right out as soon as the straight was reached, Waltaka was first to enter the rut) home from Symbol, Skyrena, and Knight Commander, and a furlong from the post Knight Commander shot out He soon put the Issue beyond doubt and won without pressure. Skyrena finished fast to cut Waltaka out of second money on the post. Glenora Boy was two lengths away in front of Symbol. Lockit, when going well, broke a fetlock about half a mile from home and had to be destroyed. Knight Commander has been some time regaining his last season’s form, but should now carry on. Skyrena did her best work over the business stages. Waltaka, who Is now nine years old, nearly brought off a surprise. Symbol and Epic both showed the effects of the tearaway tactics adopted with them, and they were out of the contest early In the run home.
A Stirring Struggle The Novice Stakes resulted in the closest finish of the day. Lockheed and Eastern Prince led the field for the first half-mile, and Sweet Mystery then went to the front to have a slight lead into the straight from Lockheed. These two settled down to a long tussle, and Just as Sweet Mystery had Lockheed beaten, Greenbank and Night-shift cam* on the scene with late runs. Greenbank got up on the post to win from Night-shift, who just shaded Sweet Mystery, with Lockheed a neck away. The winner has always had a big reputation, but a patient policy has been adopted with him, and he is likely now to earn further successes. Night-shift made a creditable showing, as he was well back turning for home and would have won In another stride or two. Sweet Mystery had every chance to break her maiden status, but stopped badly at a critical stage. She has been a big disappointment and may not be further persereved with as a racing proposition. Lockheed was In the picture throughout, but nevertheless raced below expectations. Boreas Improves Crackajack again failed to go off correctly in the Snowdon Trot and Robinette did not leave the mark. The early leader was Paddy Pointer, who had a big break at one stage, but lasted only for seven furlongs, Burt Scott, Shuffle, Indian Clipper, and Boreas were first into the straight, and Indian Clipper had charge a furlong from home. Boreas then put in a fast run, and soon getting to the front, won by a wide margin from Indian Clipper, with Warwick a fair third, a neck in tront of Burt Scott,
Another Narrow Verdict Tire Sandown Hack Handicap was won by Synthetic, but only alter a strong challenge by Gold Don. Sham Boy backed out when the barrier went up and was hopelessly left. Synthetic soon drew to the front from Raceaway, Miss Tasta, Philibun, and Gold Don, and had a clear advantage turning tor home from Raceaway and Gold Don. Raceaway could not carry on and Gold Don, who had had a good run on the fence rounding the home turn, challenged Synthetic. In a battling finish Synthetic held on Just long enough to gain a half-head victory from Gold Don, who would have secured the verdict in another stride. Two lengths away Lord Midas beat Papernilla by half a head for third money, with Raceaway next. Synthetic owed his victory to the advantage he gained early. He was stopping, at the finish and was lucky that Gold Don had not made his final effort a little sorner. The latter, who was in keener demand than for some time past, ran up to the good form which he occasionally displays, but mostly on soft ground. Raceaway did not get to the front at any stage and was never really ( likely. Philibuu was well supported, but was one of the first beaten. j

M.L.C., Messrs H. F. Nicoll, and J. R. L. Stanfoicl, who have been appointed judges by the president of the Racing , Conference, Mr A. S. Elworthy. S. Nausbaum. who’is in partnership with his son, has appealed against the disqualification ol the horses raced by the partnership. Rehandicapped
After successes at Hororata, Circular Note has been rehandicapped to 7-9 m the Milburn Handicap on the first day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting and Scartecn to 8-0 in the Salisbury Handicap, West Coast Circuit
The racing and trotting on the West Coast Christmas and New Year circuit this year promises to prove more successful than for many years. The nominations have so far closed in only three clubs, and if these can be taken as a useful guide, all of the remaining clubs can look forward to large lists. There will be more Canterbury horses than usual, and this should prove an inducement to many Canterbury racegoers to visit the West Coast this year for the circuit. It should also tend to provide sufficient scope tor racegoers on the West Coast, many ot whom go to other parts of the Dominion in the holiday season. All clubs report forward arrangements for then forthcoming meetings. The tracks, appointments, and provision for the general public will be in keeping with the good standards set in the past. More than £BOOO is offered in stakes, and there is ample variety and scope for all classes of gallopers, pacers, and trotters. Auckland Racing Club
As a result of his success on the second day of the Woodville Jockey Club’s meeting, Black Thread became liable for a rehandicap in the Railway Handicap at Ellerslie, and Mr tJ. McMenamfn has raised him 21b. i making his weight 9-9.
A Fine Gesture Ashes of the late Lieutenant-Colonel W. P. Farr, formerly assistant-secre-tary of the Australian Jockey Club, have been scattered on Randwick racecourse in accordance with his wish. Throughout his life. horses had been one of the greatest interests of Lieutenant-Colonel Farr, and he will long he remembered as Ihe founder of the A.J.C. school for apprentices, an institution which has made many good jockeys.

Greymouth Trotting Club With an excellent programme of 16 races, the Greymouth Trotting Club will hold its Midsummer meeting at Victoria Park, Greymouth, on January 4 and 6. The club offers an attractive programme for the medium class pacers and trotters. The stakes have been increased £55 on last year’s figures, and this rise brings the increase to 43 per cent, since 1935. The total stakes for the coming meeting are £2455. Owing to there being six maiden- trotters’ races included in the Reefton and Westport programmes, the Greymouth Club has deleted the 3min 49sec class for trotters, and has provided for 3min 43sec and 3min 46sec class horses. There are two races for maiden pacers, two saddle and two harness events for horses on line 8, and three events for line 11 horses. The chief event each day is for horses assessed on 3min Slsec, the cup on the second day carrying a stake of £250, It will be run over two miles, while a 2min 19sec mile is provided in the last I race on the programme. Messrs Baillie, Neville and Company have offered a silver tea service for the winning owner of the Cup race, and Mr D. R. Dowell, Greymouth. has given a gold tie-pin. which is to be presented to the winning driver. No Action
An objection was lodged by the stipendiary steward (Mr J, S. Shaw) against second place being awarded to Indian Clipper in the Snowdon Trot Handicap at the Hororata Racing Club's meeting on Saturday on the grounds of inconsistent running. The committee decided that while it approved of the action of the stipendiary steward in bringing the charge, there was not sufficient evidence to warrant further action being taken.
