PRIZE-GIVING CEREMONIES

CHRISTCHURCH WEST HIGH SCHOOL The highest roll number in the history ftf Christchurch West High School had !been reached this year, said the headmaster (Mr A. E. Caddick) in his annual report at the prize-giving ceremony last evening. The number on March 1 was 655, comprising 378 boys and 277 girls. Pleasure at the appointment of Mr C. A. Noble as headmaster next year was also expressed in the report, in which a tribute was paid to Mr Noble’s services and ability. The demand made on the staff by military service had been heavy, Mr Caddick said (six teachers having left or being about to leave for active service). It was possible that staffing difficulties would be more acute with the needs of terri-

torial training. • Though the list to date was Incomplete, 90 old boys and five masters were already serving with the Expeditionary Forces, most of them over■eas. The chairman of the Canterbury University College Council (Mr A. E. Flower) presided, and paid a tribute to the services of the retiring headmaster (Mr Cad. dick). The school had been very successful under his regime, he said. . A presentation was made to Mr Caddick oy the senior girl (Rosemary Tracy) and the dux of the school (Ronald Chapman).
